Never again!

Ugh i was forced to buy a cake from Kroger. NEVER AGIAN. The cake tastes like bland chocolate butter ,and the icing is so sugary it made me sick after half a small peice. Never again will i buy a cake from kroger. Ever. Surprisingly though the decoration job isn't horrible.

Maybe its me? But usually cakes form kroger or publix are tolerable ,but i guess thats because i've grown up on them. How can people eat this?? icon_confused.gif

I have also noticed that some grocery store bakeries have very sugary icing. My local Kroger has really cute decorations...but the icing could rot your teeth out!

My local Sams has pretty good cake and not too sugary icing...I guess it just depends where you go. icon_smile.gif

I absolutely cannot eat a store cake or a cake mix any more. I just can't stand it. I've even gotten to the point where if I know really cheap, off brand ingredients are in a dessert (my SIL is famoua for this) I can't eat it. Yes, I am a food snob and a bigger cake snob. It's hard when you want something sweet but don't feel like baking and you know nothing from the store is going to be right. It's hard to be a snob but somebody's gotta do it. icon_lol.gificon_rolleyes.gif

Yeah ,and i think it depends on the icing. Their regular icing they use on most of their cakes is just sickeningly sweet ,but their stabalized whip cream is still sweet but tolerable. I mean one bite of this icing is like eating 2 cups of just sugar.

Yes. I think the icing is too sweet and super thick. I don't think cake icing should be more dense than the actual cake. I can't really even taste the cake over the icing. It's kind of just there to hold up the decorations. I guess I'm a snob but I don't hold the bakery workers responsible. They have to work with what they're given and they do a pretty good job of decorating considering they have to work so quickly.

Aaaah but being a cake snob would have saved me from having a stomach ache. Tonight i just NEEDED a chocolate cake ,but wasn't allowed to bake.

I agree, Lisa. The decoration job was pretty good though. I blame Kroger for my stomach ache. I think next time i'll go get one of those cakes you can get near the pies in the frozen section. Those are pretty good.

Would you believe I actually had a good cake once from Walmart. I'm almost ashamed to say it. It was one of those really small layer cakes (chocolate on chocolate) and it had sat in the back of the car for a good 2 hours in late August when it gets hot enough to melt asphalt. That cake didn't melt but it must have been chemically altered cause it was soft, gooey and really good. I probably shouldn't have eaten it being that it didn't melt and it had to be at least 110 in the car. What do they put in that stuff...LOL!

It has been a while...but I bought a really good cheesecake from Walmart. It was kind of more like a pie...really creamy. I guess it tasted so good since I sometimes get sick of cake. icon_lol.gif

LOL! That's kinda scary!! I can't see how that would even be edible!! It didn't even melt... goodness... icon_surprised.gif But if it tastes good it must be ok, right?? icon_razz.gif

I've had my share of good grocery store cakes ,but usually thats because we make a special order at Publix. So we usually get their best flavored cake IMO(vanilla) ,there least sugary icing(stabalized whipped cream), and usually with fresh strawberries and sometimes strawberry gel.

Nope...didn't melt at all. It was a little surprise cake for my B-day that the kids got me. That's why it sat out in the car...to surprise me. I would have expected to walk back to a puddle of goo but here it is. The only grocery store cake I ever liked. It was still warm when I ate it. I think it's kind of cute too.
