Hi, I am going to make my boyfriends mother a birthday cake for her 70th birthday in a couple of weeks......I had an idea of making 7 and zero cake....are those pans big enough or do I need a sheet cake for them???? Or would a sheet cake be better with flowers etc etc????

Any ideas????

The newer Wilton number pans aren't very big. More like individual serving size. I'm not sure about the older ones. Here's a chart though for making number cakes. It tells you which size/shape cakes to make to get the most out of your cake.

I really hope this doesn't sound like I'm knocking your idea, but I think the sheet cake with flowers, something elegant would be the best. I just think its more appropriate for a 70 year old..unless she's comfortable enough with her age, you know what I mean..? I really hope you don't take it the wrong way, just lending some advice.

I think a sheet cake..with lavender icing, and some white and darer purpler daisies? I think that would look beautiful!

I do 'number' cakes quite often. In fact, I working on one now.
I use sheet cakes. I get the number online and have it blown up so that it uses up as much of the cake as possible. Most of the time I even cut outside the lines of the number template.

I find it easier to sculpt the cake when it is partially frozen. It's much easier to handle. You should base the size on the number of servings that you'll need...and then make a larger cake. Some numbers don't yield as many servings as others.

There area couple of pictures of these cakes on my website: www.crawfordscreations.com!! Have fun!!

Yeah I have to agree...I'd tend to stay away from the "70th" thing! What lady wouldn't love to have a cake decorated with flowers? Another idea would do an autumn theme cake and make beautiful fall colored leaves. Or perhaps include something that really relates to her....such as a hobby!

If you wanted to give her a number cake, you could put the two ideas together. Take the numbers you want, and instead of just frosting or staring them decorate them with flowers and things along those lines.

I like the sheet cake with her favorite flowers.
