Okay I just started using my countertop mixer (given to me) the coating on the flat beater is starting to crack/ break. I read it was dishwasher safe so I figured okay maybe that was the problem dishwasher wore it out. I went to a local home appliance store and bought a replacement I inspected it it looked new I only used it yesterday NEVER put it in the dishwasher decided I would only wash it by hand and I went to put it up a few minutes ago and noticed it already is showing some signs that it may be poossibly breaking down? Has anybody else had this problem? is making icing to much stress on the Flat beater? I can't figure out why this is happening and definitly can't buy a new beater every couple of batches. icon_confused.gif

I also have a kitchen aid counter top mixer....My flat beater is fine, I've use it all the time when I make my cakes and icing........

Could it be the dish washer????????

I wash mine by hand all the time........

That sounds strange, I wouldn't think a new beater would crack that fast....

Call the company and let them know about your problem. They may just replace it for you.

Or the height between your bowl and blade are just barely too close and it's enough to wear it down, but not enough to hurt the mixer? icon_confused.gif

I've had my KA for over a year now and this is no sign of wear on the flat beater. I put mine the top rack of the dishwasher to wash.

How can I tell if the height is off? The bowl lifts to position and locks in place. I know it is not the dishwasher because I did not put the 2nd one in the dishwasher. The breaking part is close to where it attaches to the mixer the round part not at the top I guess I could say the stem looking part.

Sounds to me like it could be rubbing on the top part of the beater where it meets the mixer.

My flat beater is chipping as well, but I've had it for a long time. I thought it was because I wash it in the dishwasher but who knows.

IS this a kitchenaid brand or a different brand?

That might be the problem.

I read in earlier posts where KA mixers can need adjustments in height at any time (even if used for years). I would agree it is a height problem. The KA manual you got should go over how to test the height. I also think someone mentioned (but I haven't tried) putting a dime in your bowl, and the beaters should be able to move it around the bowl without any problems.

Search the posts for "dime" perhaps?

Yes, it is a kitchenaid brand

CakesByEllen, I did a search on dime and nothing relating to that came up. I haved emailed Kitchenaid custmoer service and I am calling them. If it is the height I would think it would be wearing at the bottom not the top? I so hope to get this resolved I have gotten so spoiled to it in the short time I have had it.

Okay kitchenaid is mailing me a new beater that does not have the coating on it YEAH!!! They said if it was the height adjustment it would show wear at the bottom.

That's really great of them to send you a replacement!

I wore one flat beater out on my little 4.5 qt KA (plastic coating wore off at the bottom) but its replacement has lasted longer than the original. Both are KA brand and both are washed very frequently in the dishwasher. I've had the replacement beater for 4 or 5 years now.

No I just called customer service dept and explained to them what was happening but I bought the first replacement, they are replacing the one I just bought Mon. not necessarly the one that came with the mixer that is just considered wear and tear for the age (The mixer was bought in 98')

..the enamel around the top of my beater is chipping off too! I guess I can't complain because I have had it for several years and use it constantly. My newer 6qt. one has no coating on the beater, which I really like. Looks like it's time for me to get a new beater too!

I think I figured out my problem, I realized what I was doing today that may be creating that problem, after I finish making my icing I have a habbit of hitting the beater on the side of the bowl to remove icing off of it , just happens to be the same spot wear the breakdown is occuring! Thankfully the new one I am getting is not coated because I am not so sure that I am going to break that habbit!

My KA flat beater did the same thing. Has been like that for years and I just keep using it. Can't see that it is wearing much more. I couldn't decide if it was just a defective beater, something I did, or if it was rubbing something. I may call them also for a replacement. Thanks for posting this so I learned that it isn't just mine.
