Do You Charge Per Piece, Size Or Decoration?

I was wondering, How do you charge someone for a cake??? Per pieces or the size or how they want it decorated???? I'm still new at this, so far I'm having a blast decorating cakes.....I have not charged anyone, although I really haven't been doing this for a long period of time....I am still taking the Wilton cake courses, almost finish with course 1...Still debating on taking course 2 and 3.......

The easy answer to that question is yes.
You can price all three ways. Generally a per serving price is done on something like a wedding, groom's or quineanera cake - the bigguns.
Something smaller, like an 8" round birthday cake is generally priced by the size, but if you get past basic decorations you charge extra for the extra decorations (extra time.)

I charge per slice for a wedding cake. I charge a little extra for fillings or fondant.
For other specialty cakes...it depends on the size and the decorating. I charge less for edible images and more for cakes that I do transfers and have to fill in all the colors.
Another good idea is to find out what local bakeries charge for similar cakes...that will give you a place to start.
Ok, thanks for your input!...I will keep that in mind.....Although I don't think I'm ready to go after the wedding cakes just yet...I be to afraid of them falling or something........

it depends on my mood....i know this is bad i need to set a price plan and enforce it but ....im working on this.
I have set prices for all of my different size "everyday" cakes, desserts and pies. For wedding cakes I usually charge by the serving and then add on if the decorations are elaborate.
My neighbor has asked me to make a christmas tree cake...How much would or should I charge for that???? I'm using the Wilton Christmas tree pan...Do I charge for the cake mix, etc, etc??????

ingredients, power-usage, home-kitchen usage, travel, labour, etc etc, and my favourites: frustration and aggravation.
Multiply by three: write the amount down, and have a cup of coffee:
Consider:
Check the local bakeries for comparable products - it doesn't have to be a tree. Remember you are a custom baker and decorator....
If it seems too much, then it is probably the correct amount..
If it seems too little, check the amount again..
If you are going to do this as a $$-concern, start off right [especially with friends and family] - DO NOT UNDER-PRICE!

I got told to charge 25.00 to 30.00 for custom cake, cause it was a cake not found in stores, etc etc.......i did add up everything, cake making isnt cheap at all......
