I tried to use it once just to make a practice cake and it was not like cutting through a regular cake and it tasted kinda yucky! Anyone who would be willing to share with me what the secrets to fondant are? I did put the buttercream layer under it but it just was soooo different that I haven't used it since (this was about 3 years ago) but I really want to get into using it more....it looks so neat. Any input is greatly appreciated.

What brand did you use??? Satin Ice is tasty. Alot of people here use the marshmallow fondant. I never have but everyone raves about it!

What kind of fondant did you use? I make the marshmallow fondant and I love it .. it tastes really good .. there is also one called Satin Ice and it's really good too but it's kind of expensive. I put 2 layers of buttercream (a crumb coat and my final coat) .. I smooth it down and then apply my fondant ... a lot of people can't adjust to fondant as it has such a different texture from buttercream.

Wilton's is the King of Horrible Fondant.

There are several different views on fondant, you'll find that overwhelmingly, people on this board seem to love marshmallow fondant (not I, scratch is much, much better) while others prefer Satin Ice packaged fondant. Wilton's fondant is pretty much below disliked, I'd say despised is more accurate. Some prefer making their fondant from scratch...

You don't have much to lose, so I'd say go ahead and make a batch up and try it again. You'll find an excellent scratch recipe here, the marshmallow version here and Satin Ice can be purchased at several stores online - do a Google search for SatinIce fondant for sources.

Try them all before deciding to give up on fondant.

Hi Colocak!
I'm from Colorado too and I really don't think people here have caught on to fondant. It's just not popular here like it is near the coasts and such. I have made 2 or 3 fondant cakes and they were cakes I did for free. No one has ever ordered a fondant cake from me-yet. So, it's hard to get alot of practice when no one is ordering it. Personally, I would prefer a buttercream cake over a fondant one, but maybe that is just because I'm not used to.
