I Know This Is Kinda Dumb: Attaching Ribbon?

How do you attach ribbon to the bottom outer edge of a cake? Do you use frosting to hold the ends in place? Do you brush some on the ribbon and then put it on the cake? The more I look at this website, I'm finding so many different techniques that I would've never thought of. Thanks!

If I put ribbon around my fondant covered cakes, I just wrap it around and use 2 sided tape. I put a small piece under on side, overlap the ribbon just a little and then press it gently. I always make sure this is on the back side of my cakes ...
