My husband surprised me last night with tickets to a Broadway show for Christmas - which from Kentucky, is no small feat.

Mr. goodcakefairy rocks!! He gave me this box with a "Phantom of the Opera" mask, a Christmas card closed with red wax and the Phantom's seal. The tickets were inside a music box. It was a complete surprise and something I can check off my "50 things to do before I die" list, only it was never on the list because I NEVER thought we'd be able to do it. DH'll probably be listening to a basketball game during the show, but it the thought that counts.

Anyway, I was just wondering if there's something cake-related I should really do while in New York, because I'll probably never have the opportunity again.

That's where Colettes Cake shop is. I think her actual store might be located in Brooklyn, I'm not sure though.

Have fun in NYC. My husband and I went 2 years ago and LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT!!!!

We rode the subways everywhere, we walked, and just took it all in.

I am so jealous! I want to go to New York sooooo bad! My husband is a firefighter and New York is THE place for firefighters. Anyway, New York is also full of cake decorators and the like. I would just do a search to find any shops or suppliers to check out. There are a lot there but you never know who has a store front and who has just a commercial space. Definitely check out Collette's place though. That would be cool! Also, I have heard there are some great cupcake shops there too!
Let us know how it goes and have a great time,
Heather

Every few Christmases he really pulls a great surprise off. Two years ago, he had our wedding photo matted with the movie tickets from our very first date - 12 years before. He'd saved them all that time!

I cried like a little girl. This kind of stuff just irritates my dad, who says DH is ruining holidays for all other husbands.

Hi,

We took the kids to NYC for vacation this summer and WE LOVE NYC!!!!!!! It was the best vacation ever!! We visited The Buttercup Bake Shop and Magnolia Bakery only because that is all we could squeeze in. They were both great but I liked Buttercup Bake Shop better out of the two. There are a lot of other places I have on my list for next time....I told my hubby we will have to go 2 extra days so I can get my extra cake fix in!!!

HAVE FUN!!

Berta

mr. goodcake fairy sounds like an amazing husband. One to be very jealous of for all us other girls, who's DH's are very nice, but not thoughtful like he is.

Anyway, I'd say the 2 big decorators have been mentioned.
I wish i could think of more. I should really make a trip down to NY just to check stuff out seeing as i live 2.5 hours away.

You will fall madly in love with "The Phantom". I've seen it twice and would see it again and again. The city is a great place to be at Christmas (actually anytime). My in-laws live in manhatten and we go all the time. Visit Rockefeller plaza and see the tree. Go to 5th Ave and see the windows made up for the holidays at Sak's. They're unbelievable. So much to do, so lilttle time. Enjoy yourself. thumbs_up.gif

Hi there....you're going to love New York at Christmastime...do all of the above....

absolutely NOTHING beats the walk down fifth avenue during this season.

Go to the diamond district (47th between 5th & 6th) and see the incredible jewelry in every single store on the whole block!
Go from 49th street & fifth at Rockefeller center...see the tree....going to Top of the Rock (Brand spanking new observation deck) and keep walking uptown to see the store window of Saks, Tiffany's, etc, etc... keep going till you get to Central Park and then take a carriage ride....you will never forget it.

Phantom is cool...the whole feeling of Broadway is an experience it itself.

Colette is actually in Manhattan (she lives in Brooklyn Heights)....she's in the village, which is just another unbelievable experience. All the other cake shops I know of have been mentioned. I, myself, shop in Brooklyn at Kerekes.

Don't forget to visit Macy's and Lord & Taylor (if you like to shop). Before you go to Lord & Taylor, check out the NY Times....they almost always have coupons for a percentage off. Bloomies is on 59th & Lex.....another must see.

I hope you're staying about a month!! But even that won't be enough!!

I'm a native New Yorker. As you know Colette Peters, Sylvia Weinstock, Ron Ben Isreal, Elisa Strauss of Confetti Cakes, and Kate Sullivan from Lovin Sullivan all have cake shops in Manhattan, New York (NY NY). Scott Clark Woolley has the Academy of Cake Art near Central Park. They all have beautiful websites and contact information. Jacque Torres, the famous chocolatier, has a store in Brooklyn, NY. He is a professor at The French Culinary Institute, which is in Manhattan NY. The Insitute has their own restaurant which I believe is operated in part by the students. You might want to arrange to tour the school or eat at the restaurant. The school has a website with information. Sorry, I don't know how to cut and paste web addresses yet.

The largest supply store that I know, and personally visit is the New York Cake and Baking Supply Company on West 22nd Street between 6th Avenue (Avenue of the Americas) and Fifth Avenue, which is in Manhattan. If you can take the subway, or expect a long drive--the traffic in Manhattan is brutal. Barnes & Nobles is just down the block from there on 6th Avenue between W. 23rd and W. 22nd. They have an indoor cafe and an extensive collection of cake books. You can read the books and snack. There is no pressure to buy anything,

I would definitely visit the Central Park Area, Fifth Avenue near Rockefeller Center and the Empire State Building. Times Square is also a must (West 42nd Street). If you have time, the Village (which is below 14th Street) also has quaint shops, good restaurants, and several parks. Most people often forget about the Staten Island Ferry---which is FREE---It goes right past the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Have a great time! If you need more specific information or assistance, let me know.
