Hi Everyone!
I'm new here and I just had a couple questions. Is anyone here licensed in South Carolina? If so, could you please tell me what the procedures and costs are for becoming licensed? Is it hard ? I don't know the first thing about this. All I know is that I love cake decorating and would like to turn it into a business. Thanks in advance for any input/advice!!
Teresa

It is very rare for a home kitchen to be permitted under Retail Food Establishment Regulation 61-25. This is because of the need for commercial hoods, commercial dish machines, approved commercial well or municipal water source, grease traps, approved wastewater disposal and other requirements of the regulation that most home kitchens cannot meet. One additional requirement is a separation of the family kitchen from the permitted kitchen is required. It is required by regulation that No operation of a retail food establishment shall be conducted in any room used as living or sleeping quarters(Regulation 61-25).

I don't want to rain on your parade. But you cannot run a food service establishment out of your home in South Carolina. I have talked to some people that do it but legally you cannot. I am from South Carolina too and have looked into this. Your best bet would be to find someone that has a commerical kitchen that would be willing to let you rent some space for a couple hours a week. Or even permanently. If you find out different let me know.

That is so sad for our SC friends Maybe they'll follow TN's lead and establish some guidelines that home kitchens can meet. TN is in the process of implementing the new regs so if it works for us, maybe other southern states will follow.
Thats true. I don't like it either. Maybe if enough people complain they will change it.
Here's what happened in TN if you'd like to read about it...

I would love if this was applicable in WI.
I am too afraid to start looking into the laws in case I get "caught". Which right now I have very very few cake orders coming in so I should not be such a scardy cat I guess <sigh>
