I've searched and found a few posts about this. I want to fly from NY to FL with a copy of the baby shower clothesline cake in my photos. I figure i can take the cake as my carry-on.

My question is, should I bring assembled or unassembled? Not sure how I would be able to bring two unassembled cakes, much less one! DH thinks I am absolutely crazy - but hey! i DO cakes - i can't show up without one! I won't have time between arriving and the shower to bake, make fondant and decorate, so my plan is to bring the fondant-covered cakes and decorate there.

Also, it's an outdoor shower in South Florida - I'm doing a Crisco buttercream and MMF. Will there be any problems with this?

Any suggestions would be apprecieated - or is DH right and I am nuts?

I flew from VA to Las Vegas this summer with a cake. I did not use fondant - so I cannot help you there but did you all butter cream - It was all frosted with a FBCT on it as well. I had no problems So I would think assembled would be easiest! Just make sure you have sturdy box. One leg of the flight I had it under the seat in front of me and one leg it had to go it the overhead bin - both were fine. I told the guy sitting next to me that It was a cake (since I had a window seat) so he would not let anyone put anything else up in the bin on it - it was actually quite funny. icon_lol.gif

I wouldn't think you would have any problems outside eithere - being it is all crisco buttercream - it stand tempetures the best. Good luck!

THe recipe will hold up just fine.

As for assembled, all baggage has to go through that screening maching. Just make sure you don't have something too tall to fit in. Remember they lay your carry on bags usually sideways and put them in. I didn't assemble the last cake I brought because I knew it would be too tall and of course you can't lay it down.

Update - I brought the cake on the flight as my carry-on. I found a clear plastic box at Target - it was meant for Christmas ornaments, but it worked like a charm. It was 12x12 and had two trays that snapped together to make the box 9" high. It even had a carrying handle. I placed each layer on nonskid shelf liner. They arrived perfectly! The only problem I had was when the screeners wanted to "inspect" the cake - they wanted to eat it!

I flew my wedding cake from Phoenix to Indianapolis 7 years ago. I baked every tier (4 tier)....wrapped each layer individually in freezer paper......froze each layer.......found a box that was a perfect fit.......put each frozen layer in the box .......covered it all with a garbage bag ...and it flew in the belly of the plane.......it had no icing on it.......the nice people at the airport put bright red tags all over it ......when I told them what it was they were very careful......I think they thought it was decorated.......I didn't tell them otherwise......it arrived in IN with not problem........it wasn't frozen when we got there but it was ready to frost......the cake was a hit.......the reception was a disappointment.....but that's another story icon_biggrin.gif
