My cakes always look very good to me until I see the picture I took of them. Then it is like all I can see is all the mistakes that I didn't even know was there. Makes me wonder if everyone else sees these things too (customers). On the cake I just did this past weekend I thought everything was looking great and when I uploaded this picture from my camera I was like -What is that! All I could see is the dips in the icing on the sides and I think I should have put a top border around it. What do you think?

I think that you did a great job. I actually like it without the border, it makes it more realistic. Sometimes we are our worst critic. Don't worry it looks great.

I totally feel your pain. I look at the photo and go -"DANG - I swear that was not there when I did the cake!!" Haaaaa But as it has been said many times before on this site - we are our worst critics! I did not see anyone of the things you pointed out on your cake until you pointed them out icon_smile.gif I think it looks awesome!

Don't beat yourself up icon_smile.gif

I go thru the same thing each time I look at a picture of a cake I did...I find so many boo-boos and stuff but I don't think other people notice it at all....we are just to critical of ourselves! Your cake look great!!

Oh, I know EXACTLY what you mean.....the flash on the camera causes every dang dimple, sag, wave, and rip to show through. That's why models have their portraits airbrushed!! The camera doesn't lie!! However, with that being said, your cake looks excellent. I don't really see the imperfections in it, as an outsider. It looks pretty darn perfect to me.

It is always easier for us to point out our own mistakes and second guess ourselves. I happen to love this cake, and hope to do one so cool in the future!

Can feel your pain...go through the same thing.

Your cake is fine with or without a border, stop critizing yourself so hard.

Your cake looks great! Your being too hard on yourself icon_smile.gif And I do that too, when I see the picture I always find some kind of flaw. But hey, thats what makes my cakes personal and different, not mention 100% unique! icon_wink.gif

I love your cake!

I really like it without the border, I think it's GREAT! I think a border may have taken away from the picture. This is only my opinion I am NOT an expert! (Wish I were though!! lol)

I think you're pretty brave! *grin* I slap a border on every cake, it's like a security blanket with me. One day I'll get the nerve to go borderless, it's like an addiction.

ditto. Just like the camera adding 10 lbs to ya, the camera will expose every flaw on a cake. icon_surprised.gif

This is exactly how I feel. Sometimes I am even hesitant to post pictures because of this exact reason.

I see all the mistakes and they really seem to stick out when you post them. But we are our own worst critic.

I don't see anything wrong with this cake...It is a great job.

I think you did a great job! It is definitly not a cake anyone could get in a store! Very well done! Sometimes I'll take a pic of one of my cakes with my digital camara ,look at the screen and then go back and change what I didn't like and delete the first pic and retake it. Am I the only one that does this?

I agree with the rest here that your cake looks great!
Sometimes though we cannot go back and "fix" something, most of the time I try to. I've even taken off the top edges of a cake and redone them totally.

I think all decorators do the same thing. If we all thought our cakes were perfect...than we wouldn't learn anything and our talent wouldn't grow. I always look at my cake pictures and think of things I could have done differently, or things I could have added.

I think the cake turned out Great! Don't beat yourself up about it, I'm sure the customer loved it!!

I absolutely agree...apparently there is a class on how to take pictures of your cake that will make it looks its best....because most of us are amateur photographers (at least I am), we don't know the several secrest to successfull picturing....I will try and find the info on the class and post it...

i totally agree with bikegal, i would NEVER go borderless! borders hide an uneven edge, create a fuller cake, maybe one day i will let go of my "security border" and create a work of art like yours ckirkland. one day.....

Every cake is unique, and no 2 totally alike. Your cake turned out great, and I bet the recipient loved it. I feel for you because I see every flaw in my work also, but I am the only one. I like your cake the way it is without the top border, and I think it is beautiful.

It's funny how a border is security to some and a nightmare to me-I can't get a top border on straight to save my life! icon_lol.gif I really have to work on it. Of course we always see our mistakes but I think for the most part the customers are so happy they have something unique and tasty-not the same ol' grocery store sheet cake with squiggles thrown on-that they don't really notice!

I think the cake looks great though. I'm also trying to learn to keep all this in perspective too and remind myself that I'm still learning alot and each cake is good practice!

Keep up the good work!!
