In about two weeks, I'm planning to make a winter themed cake and need to know how to make the snowflakes on the wire that stick out of the top of the cake (does that make sense???).

I would also like to put snowflakes on the side of the cake, which I assume are fondant, but are the cutters for this?

Thanks!

In my Wilton book it has a snowflake cake..I think I read that the snowflakes were made of Royal icing.. I will get my book out in a few and read it again..

I saw them do snowflakes on the food network and they piped them with royal icing. You would let that dry and then they are pretty hard and will stand up on your cake but very delicate.

I recently tried piping over a thin wire and just let one side dry, then flipped it over and piped the other side, leaving the wire basically in the middle. I made hearts but I am sure you could make snowflakes, just be sure to construct sturdy ones, not the most delicate ones.

You might try using chocolate transfers instead of fondant. That's what I'm planning to do. Then all you have to do is print some different snowflake designs off the computer and trace with chocolate. I'm planning on painting them with luster dust to really add sparkle. You could try something like that if it wouldfit in with your scheme for the cake.

Another question...

To put snowflakes on the side of the cake, I'd like to do a fondant cut-out. Can anyone suggest cutters that they prefer?
