Hello All,
This question is for anyone who has made a 3D Thomas the Tank Engine cake. How did you make him? Did you use the Choo Choo pan from Wilton or just build it up? Any help is greatly appreciated because I have one to do in December. I have a picture of Thomas from the show but wanted to get some advice from someone who has made him before.
Thank you in advance,
Heather
I made a Thomas using the stand up choo choo pan. It was one of my first stand-up cakes and he came out okay. I just outlined the colors on the train and then piped them on using tip 18. I used cotton candy coming out of his smoke stack. He was cute and not too difficult. I piped on his wheels but you could use oreos/oreo minis instead. I also didn't decorate the cake board and I've since seen some really cute ideas like a track made from wafer cookies/twix surrounded by coal made from crushed cookies.
I haven't done Thomas, but I did do the James No. 5 engine for my son. I used the choo-choo pan as well! Star tip, etc. My picture is in my gallery. It turns out really cute; however, my son did come back to me about 6 months later and tell me everything that was wrong with it...he is a major Thomas the Train fan, and believe me...he knows his stuff! Ornery of him, but also kind of cute! Made me realize how much he really does pay attention to detail.
Good luck...post pictures when your finished!
I did a Thomas as my first 3D cake. He's in my gallery, along with a pic of him "naked" before I put any icing (fondant) on, because someone else wanted to see how I built him.

Thank you all very much! chyna, the "naked" cake really helps. I was thinking of using the Choo Choo pan but after looking at Thomas pictures, it's not the same shape. I will definitely be carving him out of some stacked sheet cakes! I also have a JoJo's Circus cake to go with this one so when I get them done I will post the pictures!
Thanks again! I knew I could count on my buds at CC!

If I were to do him again, I would trim the cakes better of the "Crusts" but he was my first try, and I didn't even have a set of instructions, just the printed pic on the stove, and the tiny little image in the back of one of Debbie Brown's books! LOL!
I pressed a cookie cutter into the front of the cake to get the round front tank...used that circle and a long knife to carve the roundness
Since I was using fondant, I just made the face on a disc of grey and stuck it on.
