Hello All!

I just started course 1 and I have the Rainbow cake due on Wednesday. Our instructor told us that we learn the transfer ( piping gel) method NEXT assignment but I can't understand how we can get the stars in the rainbow striaght without it. Has anyone done this cake for course 1? Did you do the transfer anyway? Is it difficult to do?

After the class, the instructor brought us over to the Wilton aisle and suggested we purchase the piping gel but I'm confused because she said we didn't need it for this cake. We are supposed to ice the cake and then bring it in to decorate so I hope I do this correctly. Pretty excited to make it and post a 3rd picture here. LOL!

I love this class and cake decorating so I'd also just like to hear from other newbies taking the classes if you are out there.

Thanks all!!

Hi Caribou..I'm starting course 1 tomorrow...I believe you just need to bring the cake with you already iced and then they will teach you the transfer when you get there so you'll just need to bring your supplies (piping gel, colors for the rainbow, etc) with you. In other words..Unless I am way off base you don't do the rainbow in advance..Just ice the cake with class buttercream then the decorating part will happen on wed when you get there

I did a piping gel cake in my first cake decorating class (not Wilton)...you outline your transfer and then lay it on your crusted icing and it leaves the design on top and then you just go over it with colored icing...It's really very easy...

CuteCookie,

You are correct...I may have misunderstood what was being asked....Anyway, what I said before is what you will do in class...Just take a cake iced in buttercream and you do the decorating in class.
Sorry if I confused you about what to do....Have fun.

Sure, That was a fun cake to make (mine was Mickey Mouse) and it really was easier than it sounded..Since then I have done a Frozen Buttercream Transfer and I like it even better. Have you tried that yet?

Nope not yet Cindy but I'm so anxious to try it. Since I haven't taken my course yet I am holding off..I have very few supplies so don't want to buy some of the same stuff I already know I'll get for the courses LOL. I have the course books because they were sent to me as a gift but will get my course kit tonight when I get there. The only thing I've played with so far is making fondant roses..I'm loving that. I've probably read every tutorial I could get my hand on for other stuff like the BCT and CCC and well you name it.

Hello future cake decorating addict !! Just take your cake to class iced smooth. You also need wax paper, your piping gel and your paint brush from your kit. The instructor will help you transfer your pattern for the rainbow. It is easy and you will use the method often unless you are a painter or artist. Have fun !!

Thanks so much all! I will just bring in the cake iced as she asked and then do the piping transfer in class. In case she didn't mean for us to use it I will make it and bring it anyway or at least get it started so I can make it there.

Can't wait to do this cake!!! Yep, an addict already.

Caribou,

There's nothing to make for piping gel. For the class, you need to bring what is on the list on the left of that day's lesson in the book. From memory, you want a plain iced cake (I think they use light blue). Bring your tubs of icing in the rainbow colors (bring some of your base color too in case you need to fix your cake), bring the piping gel tub too.

Also, my instructor said to only bring a 1-layer cake (2 layers was not needed).

Have fun!
