You'll probably have to buy the dusts off the net. There's one little, locally owned shop near me that sells dusts, but they only sell the Nu Silver and one of the golds. If I want anything else, I buy it from Country Kitchen's website: www.countrykitchensa.com. I think the bigger hobby stores probably avoid selling it for liability reasons; it's not FDA approved, although it is considered non-toxic.

The Wilton Shimmer Dusts aren't true luster dusts. From what I've read, they're more like just crushed up edible sparkles. The Wilton website says to use their Shimmer Dusts, all you have to do is paint the fondant with a little water and then sprinkle the dust onto the wet surface. Luster dusts come in a huge array of colors and can be used similarly to the Wilton dusts, or they can be used dry, or they can be mixed with a clear alcohol or extract (I use Everclear) and painted onto the work surface. I've seen the Wilton dusts at Hobby Lobby, but if you want a true luster dust (or petal dust or pearl dust), you'll probably have to order online unless you have a good sized cake supply store near you (one that specializes in cake supplies).

Hope that helps some! icon_smile.gif

So I came across some petal/shimmer dust at my Joann's that was not in the cake isle. It sais non-toxic on the bottles. I was wondering if this would work. Any suggestions? Thanks, Keli

I know you asked for the cheapest website, but why not take a look at Scott Clark Woolley's website, "Cakes By Design". (Sorry, but I don't know how to cut and paste the link just yet.) His luster dust may not be the cheapest, but it is the best quality, and a little bit goes a long way. I took 2 classes from him recently and the results from using his products were so amazing I purchased some!

I just looked at this sight. Wow. I would love to take one of his classes! I'm in CT, so it's not too far. I'm definitely going to have to watch for the 2006 class schedule.

I just started expirimenting with shimmer dust (Wilton brand). But, after reading several posts I'm going to try some of the others.

Thanks for all of the links. I've already got the calculator adding up all that I want to get (or at least that I can get for right now).

Hey tye, the cheapest website I've found for luster dust, petal dust, and pearl dust is cakedeco.com. icon_lol.gif The price is 2.25 for a 2g jar. Sounds like a deal to me!
