My dad's 60th is coming up in a few weeks. I told my mom I'd do a cake for the party. He's really not looking forward to this birthday, feeling old finally icon_sad.gif So...I have an idea for a cake and was wondering how I could do it and if anyone has anything like this or any input. I've seen cards or t-shirts that have all the names you call someone on them- Dad, Grandpa, Brother, Friend, etc. I was thinking of a sheet cake with a big Happy Birthday in the middle and then all the names around it. He's a former Marine, a birdhouse builder and a PROUD America. Somehow I'd like to incorporate those too and that's the only way I could think to make it look like it is supposed to go together. Any input?

TIA!
Kelly

I think you are on the right track, love this idea, it shows how many differents facets there is to a person in their life.

I like your idea too. I think it will remind him how well he's spent 60 years. Maybe make him proud of it instead of icon_sad.gif

Hi! As I was reading your original post, I pictured hats with the "names" for your Dad. You know, all the "hats" he wears or has worn: 'Dad', 'Grandpa', 'Brother', 'Friend', 'Builder', 'Marine'--(can you copy the actual hat he wore, maybe? Use his actual title--'Sergent', 'Corporal'? I'm not sure if Marines have those titles or not, but you get the idea.), etc. Also, maybe make "hats" out of cupcakes & place on big sheet cake? You may not like these ideas, but I just thought I'd throw them out there. icon_smile.gif Good luck!

I love the idea with hats. He's a hat person too so that would fit perfectly! Now I just have to figure out all the names...Thanks for the great tip!

Well, my mom finally made up her mind on a party and it's just going to be a small one with the family. My brother is going to be in from out of state and we're going to be there (not quite as far away as him) so we're just doing it on Thanksgiving. I'm going to do a small cake, but I'm leaning more towards the birdhouse idea. I think I may go buy the 3-D house pan and turn that into a birdhouse. Thanks MelC for the inspiration on that idea! I did a red, white and blue star a few years ago for him and I did another version of it this year for Memorial Day so I'm going to pass on something patriotic this year I think. I have the Course 2 book so I can do some color flow birds too while I'm at it icon_smile.gif

If you are going to do a birdhouse cake, why don't you place a flag outside the door, like many folks display theirs? On one side of the house you can make a little fondant work bench with little fondant tools.
