i found an auctin on ebay for a PIXMA iP4200 Photo Printer will this work for edible images?? it is brand new in box. quick answers will be appreciated as the auction ends soon.tia tracy
anyone?? im so confused about this?? it is a canon printer so i think it will work right??
No...the edible ink cartridges won't fit the iP4200. Try looking for the iP1500 or iP3000.
ok...i found a 1500 and am bidding on it now but it dosent end for another 6 days so wish me luck.... but after i started bidding i went to kopy kake and read that you cant use the half sheet frosting sheet because you need the 3000 for this.. so my question is can you print a large pic onto two 1/4 sheets and lay them next to each other on the cake?? will the seems show?? icant wait to start doing this !!!!thank you very much for all the help!! i would have been totally lost if not for you!!
You won't be able to print the half sheet with the iP3000 either. To print on those, you'd need a large/wide format printer and those a really expensive (hundreds of $$$). Last one I saw sell on eBay went for over $500 and that was a good deal.
I have printed an image on 4 of the quarter sheet ones (10" x 7.5") to make one pic. The seams will show but I was using mine as a template and frosted over them. It's the dora cake in my photos.
ahhhh!! your the one!! i saw that cake and fell in love with it!! i tried to do one like it on a shaped half sheet and drawing it on but yours was 100x better!! im so glad to know that im not wasting my money!!my husband has a really cool pic of a tiger and i wanted to do it with frosting "painted" on it to give it alot more detail and i think that it will work now...just have to wait for christmas!!! hahaha
Thanks! I love using the printer to make templates. Makes decorating so much easier. When you do it, just print a draft copy or an outline to save on ink since you'll be frosting right over it. Hope Santa brings you one
I have found a canon IP6000D for a great price. Will this work for the edible images? Also will I be able to use the larger frosting sheets or even a half sheet?
you can also print your image on a large scale by printing a "poster" it will give you an image printed over 4 sheets of 8x12 paper ...
Would this help you for a large cake??

It will work but it's not a wide format printer so it won't print on the half sheet size frosting sheets. Plus it's a 6 cartridge printer which is more printer (and more ink cartridges) than you need to print standard size edible images. If you use all 6 cartridges, it'll end up costing you more $$$ for ink cartridges and cleaning cartridges than you need to spend.
You can also operate this printer with just 4 ink cartridges though...the other 2 are photo cartridges that are only used when printing at photo quality and you shouldn't print edible images using the photo quality.
The quality of the images that come out of a 2, 4, or 6 cartridge printer is the same so sometimes less is more. I use a 2 cartridge printer and I'm really happy with it. My only complaint is that the cartridges are a lot harder to refill then the 4 cartridge sets. If I were to buy one today, I'd get a 4 cartridge system for that reason alone...the Canon iP3000.

I tried that once and the problem I ran into is that my printer setting won't let me choose the size of the poster. Since the frosting sheets measure 7.5" x 10", the poster images would go beyond the borders of the frosting sheets . I ended up resizing my image to the large size I needed and then dividing it into fourths myself and printing out each one. That worked
Lisa,
Thank you very much for your response and advice. I will start looking for a canon IP3000. Sometimes I tend to think like a guy, more power and bigger is better. Reminds me of Tim the tool man Taylor. lol[/quote]
You're welcome and try eBay...I think that's where you'll find the best deals. Just be sure to buy new and not refurbished from a reputable seller. Some of the members here were able to get their printers for $30-$40. You can also resell the ink cartridges that came with the printer to make back a little $.
Hi!
Have some bad news about the IP3000. It has been discontinued by canon. I had emailed them and they responded that the current comparable model is the iP4200.
Just a heads up if you are looking around for the IP3000.
Peggy
Is there a significant difference between the IP 1500, and the IP 3000? Also would a IP 4000 work?

Thanks Peggy...that's true. It's been discontinued for some time now along with most of the models on the compatible printer list. This is pretty common since new models come out frequently. What is uncommon is the fact that many of the newest Canon models are not compatible with the edible inks. Don't panic! The older compatible models are still available at many stores and on eBay of course The ink cartridges have always been made to fit the printers and not the other way around meaning as time goes on, the makers of the edible ink cartridges will need to update their product too.

The quality of the images will be the same. The iP1500 is a two cartridge printer...one black, on tricolor. They're harder to refill and if you don't refill, the tricolor cartridge will need to be replaced even if only one color runs out. The iP3000 is a 4 cartridge printer...one for each color. Easier to refill too.
The iP4000 will work...it's a 5 cartridge printer (extra black).

I just wanted add this in. Here's a link to Kopykake where they mention their R&D into the new cartridges. Kopykake is the leader in this stuff so just check with them now and again to see if they've got the new ones off the assembly line.

The iP3000 and iP4000 printers have been discontinued. We advise you to purchase spare print heads because Kopykake does not have cartridges to suit the newest printers (such as the iP4200).
We are researching new cartridge technology and will publish information when available.

This is what I do when I need a bigger image. Works great!
