I'm going to be making a cake for a baby shower this weekend. I would like to sculpt a cute baby figure lying under a blanket, but I'm not sure if i should or not.
Basically my problem is that i'm not sure what color to make the baby. Mom is extremely pale caucasian (sp?), dad is hispanic and dark skinned. So what color is the baby? Should i just attempt to do something inbetween or not do it at all?

I'm aplogize now if I'm not being completely PC...I'm trying to be.

Any input any of you have is extremely appreciated.

Mel

You could always ask the mother to be. See what her opinion might be, unless its a surprise shower then ask the host.

Hi Mel...seems like the family is accepting of diversity and it probably wouldn't matter what color the baby was. If they're having a boy, you could make him look like Dad. If a girl, like Mom. Do they know yet?

You could also just make it where the top of the head is showing with maybe dark hair on it.

I would probably do the baby in a medium tone. If you know the couple, you may be able to judge what their reaction may be. Some people are more sensitive than others. I wouldn't hesitate to do a medium toned baby if it were me. I try to be sensitive the the whole pc society we live in today, but you're not going to get it right all the time. I think if you make an effort to compromise, you're still doing better than some grocery store or even local bakery.

Odds are, the baby is going to come out somewhere in the middle. That's what happened to all 3 of you brother and sisters (and me). My dad is really dark Mexican, and my mom is a light caucasion. (i know I did not spell that right!). Kinda an light tan. Just a thought.

Thanks for everyone's input!

The parents-to-be are friends of mine whom i'm doing the cake as a favor for. They are definitely open to diversity.
We don't know what the baby is gonna be.
I want to really surprise the mom with the cake. So i didn't want to tell her about the sculpted baby.

I think i'm gonna go with the medium skin-toned baby.

Thanks!

I would do a medium toned as well with dark hair. A caucasian mix with any other nationality that is strong will usually result in the baby looking like the strong nationality. What I mean by this is no offense. My brother is italian mixed and my sil is full korean. All the kids look very korean with some mix so this is where I base my decisions.

Also, my brother and sil are open to diversity too but they really strive hard to find babydolls that aren't blonde/blue eyes for their daughters. They really try to find dolls that are close to what they look like. With this in mind, I would really try to do what the baby might look like.

You should be fine with the medium skin toned...they will most likely be so tickled with the cake and your thoughfulness, that they won't even be thinking about the "color".
