I just made a cake with MMF for the first time. I was just curiuos what it was like after hearing so many rave reviews. This is only my 2nd fondant experience (the first was with Wilton's ready-made yuck!). I really liked the MMF but I have an issue....When smoothing the sides of the cake, I don't know how to avoid "folds". Here is a picture of the folds I'm talking about...these are the smaller ones since I try to make the photos of my cake as good as possible!! It just seems that there is too much fondant, and when I smooth the sides it bunches up and makes folds. Is there a secret to avoiding this? Or am I just missing something?

TIA
LL

When you put your MMf on the cake, is the cake raised on something?? Like I mean not directly on the table/counter... if it is on something that lifts it up above the table/counter level all those folds should land below where you would trim to fit anyways...hope this makes sense..

No my cake wasn't elevated...it was just sitting on the cake board. That makes a lot of sense to do that though! I'll have to try that next time.

When your smoothing the sides of the cake, you have to lift the fondant slightly and smooth with your hand at the same time. You have to work your way around the cake that way. If you try to smooth the fondant without lifting it it will bunch up at the bottom. Maybe someone else can explain it better... icon_confused.gif
