When I worked in a bakery, we always gave them a smash cake free, and the parents always seemed surprised. I never heard any feedback on it. Never thought about it, but no one ever said one way or the other what they thought............ good question! Cute cake, too!

I think a lot of people do a smash cake for the first birthday. We charge 4.95 for a 6" one layer round cake. Cute cake!!!

I have only had 2 1st birthdays. It was funny, one was my Pastor's Grandson. He didn't "smash" it at all, but, took his index finger.....touched the icing and then held his finger up for his mom to wipe off! They sent me the picture and it was ADORABLE!!

Cute cake! I had never heard of a smash cake until I came to this site. And no one has ever asked for one. Maybe it's a regional thing, like groom's cakes?

I've made a few. I made one that was a 6 in. cut in half (decorated to look like a baby bonnet). The other one were two small 4 in. cakes for twins to go with a baby einstein cake. I think I'd normally do a 4 in - that's really all the child needs - but it makes really cute pictures! Maybe if you explain it like that - then they would understand it. I think it's an awesome idea and I'm glad our European friends have shared it with us. icon_smile.gif

Smash cakes are a big deal here. All the parents get one for thier child's 1st birthday. I like to make 4" rounds but have made 6" rounds too. But I think those are just too big for something that usually gets multilated! icon_razz.gif

The smash cake is the cutest part of the 1st birthday party! It was very thoughtful of you to make one. Nice job on the cake!

I definately give everyone a 5" or 6" smash cake for free with every 1st birthday order. I have surprised a lot of people, but it has been soooo worth it. I think that when you do little things like that it just keeps them coming back.

I made one for my nephew, because I thought it'd be cute for him to have his own little birthday cake to rip into, then I found out that most places offer a free one with a first birthday order and that they are called smash cakes. Believe me when I say, its's the cutest thing to see a little tyke just dig into his own little cake. Maybe mom and dad don't want him to get all nasty. I know my SIL just put a little t-shirt and his diaper on cause she knew he was gonna be all red.(it was elmo also) They just let him dig in and when the party was over, she just hauled him straight to the tub. I can say, though, that after that, every year, he wants his own little cake now, and he's five now. And every year, I try and make him his own little cake. LOL

It's a small cake that is decorated in the spirit of the main cake for a child's first birthday. Not necessarily identical, but compliments the main one. It is put in front of the birthday child to dig into as he/she will. My grandson just turned one and he dove in ---- face first!!! It was hilarious and made for great pictures! It can be very small and we always always sneak it away long before the child eats too much. We've done these in my family/friends for a long time. You're right, must be regional.

i made a smash cake for my twins' first birthday last september. it was the 3d rubber ducky cake. one of my boys loved it and had it all over, the other was so careful not to get any on himself. it was fun, though, everyone loved seeing what they would do when given free access to cake!

your elmo is too cute and it was very nice of you to think of doing the smash cake. if the parents don't want to give it to the birthday boy, maybe they can freeze it like a wedding cake top and give it to him on his second birthday? i dunno, that might be weird... lol

I'm not a professional decorator, but I made one for my son's first birthday and plan to make one for my baby-to-be's first birthday too. Made my son a Wilton Pooh Bear cake for his 1st birthday and make the single serve Pooh head for his smash cake.

Your cake is very cute! Yes, I think smash cakes are very popular. My son had one for his first birthday, and he did exactly that, smashed it into his mouth and face! It was sooo cute and fun. Of course he had a big tummy ache afterwards but I think he thought it was worth it. Most other parents I know did a smash cake for their little one's first.

I did smash cakes for both my grand-kids 1st birthdays and didn't much care what their parents said when I did it. icon_smile.gif We just let them smash into it and grab handfuls and then we removed the rest of the cake so they wouldn't choke from sticking so much into their mouth. The pictures we got were just priceless. It was highly worth cleaning up the mess afterward.

I love the idea of a smash cake for 1st b-days. My sister did it for her twins on their 1st b-day and it was so cute to see em stick their hands in, and end up wearing it in their hair and on their face! I do wish I would have thought about that at my daughter's. Kids, cakes, and fingers go all in one if you ask me. My niece and nephew are older and still can't keep their fingers off the cake before it is time to serve it. Doing the smash cakes lets them have fun, without destroying the cake everyone else is going to eat! Jen

Well, I always do smash cakes for my 1st birthdays..... Some kids eat it and some just look at it.. I think it is funny to see them all iced up in bright colors, so I always make them bright... then I tell the parents to send me photos of the kids eating them.... makes my day.

I have also had parents fuss about the sugar content in them, but kids aren't going to sit there and eat a whole one anyway... I have no resorted to using the king size muffin pan from wilton and doing it in that.. most 1 year olds just eat the icing and not the cake, so it works.

I love smash cakes, they are my favorite ones to do... and I always tell parents that if the kids diaper color changes, don't worry it is just the bright coloring I used to make their faces look so pretty icon_smile.gif
