OK, my MIL asked me to make some fall type cakes for her church bazaar and I decided to try a sculpted pumpkin cake. I DON'T KNOW WHAT I WAS THINKING doing a sculpted cake for the first time for someone else. I didn't think it would be that hard considering that the scuplting consisted of putting two bundt cakes on top of each other for the shape. But I just couldn't seem to pipe the icing right. It looked like a mutant pumpkin from hell. So I just iced it smooth and dragged a spatula dow the sides to make the bumps. It looked OK, but certainly not impressive. I didn't take pictures because I'm so ashamed. Even DH said, 'That's not good."

He got a spatula full of icing in his hair. icon_evil.gif

I'm really afraid this cake will kill any potential jobs I could get from the church ladies. I asked MIL not to tell anyone I made it.

It's just so irritating. You'd think, after making a fairly nice wedding cake last week, piping straight lines over a sphere would be something I could handle. I'm just feeling deflated and scared that the next thing I try will flop, too.

AAAAAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH!!!!

Any advice? Thanks for listening to my rant.

Don't be discouraged!! We all feel from time to time that out work is lousy and we begin to second guess our skills....Maybe bake another one and try using a ganache type icing where you pour it over the bundt cakes.Tint the icing orange...Just a thought. You could also do it in white and airbrush it if you have an airbrush!! Don't worry!! This too shall pass!! icon_smile.gif

I don't really have any advice for you on your decorating, but it seems like most of the pics I've seen of the bundt cake pumpkin the icing doesn't looke piped to me, it looks like it's applied with a spatula. I'd love to see a picture of it - all your other cakes are lovely, so I'm sure this one's not as bad as you think. Plenty of hubbies are not the most tactful, so don't take his words too hard and good for you for splattering him! thumbs_up.gif

From where I'm sitting, you've got way more successes than failures, so don't give up. We all take a little setback sometimes, that's how you learn. Chin up!

I feel your pain! I attempted a fondant bow for a stacked cake for my MIL's birthday tonight. My bow fell apart, my top cake for my 2 tier stacked cake does not look right and i can't find my tool for cutting my dowels anyway. I decided to take only the bottom layer of the cake to the party without a bow or the complimentary top cake. I question my skills right now and am seriously thinking of retracting any and all business cards i've given out. LOL
There are days like this, i'm sure your cake will go over well since i doubt anyone at the party can do as nice a job or they wouldn't have asked you to do it. I know my MIL will love my cake and if she doesn't know about the other cake, she will be none the wiser. Good luck in the future.

if you want a realistic pumpkin, cover it in fondant then airbrush it orange. if you don't have an airbrush, you could always used the wilton spays. i made a 3-d pumpkin last week and it turned out well, certainly much better than last years pumpkin! last year, i used a glaze tinted orange on it and it didn't turn out nearly as nice. the bonus is covering the cake in mmf was soooo much easier! good luck!

we've all had the nightmare cake and you'll have others. don't be afraid to try new things within sugar crafting you may discover that you're really good at certain techniques and suck at others. I sculpt really well but I totally suck at doing flowers!!! Go figure?! Therefor most of my cakes are void of flowers and when there are flowers... (ssshhhh... they're not mine....)
