Big Big Dilema!

I have a cake to make today and deliver by saturday. It's a cake for a first birthday and for 15 people. The mother wants me to write on it: "Happy 1st Birthday Princess Kendall" There simply is not enough room on the cake I'm making for 15 people to write all that. What do you suggest I do?

This is also the cake that I'm making the tiara for so there is not room to write anything on the top tier which is going to be a six inch heart. I plan on setting the heart on either a 10 in round or 10 in square.

I'm stumped!!!!!

Write it on the sides of the cake or on the cake. Put the 10 inch round on a 14 inch board and you should have enough room to write everything.HTH

Do you know how to write on the side of the cake? You could start out writting on the side of the six inch then finish on the top of the ten inch. This is the only thing I can think of. Hope you get it worked out.

Maybe you can do the lettering around the sides. Another solution is to curve the writing around the cake on the cake board.

That's what I was thinking.....writing around the sides. Unfortunately I have to add a third tier and I am going to have to ask for more $$$! I hate to do it. I'm really cutting her a deal. They are just going to have some leftover cake for a few days.


Should I try to freehand it or use my letter presses? This cake is the Disney Princess theme. I just envision a more fairytale type of script. AAARRRGGGHHH! I'm not having much confidence right now and I haven't even baked the cakes yet.

icon_biggrin.gif What I do is I would cut out a pc. of Fondant, like the size of a Greeting card (maybe 4x4) or any size then I write Happy Birthday or whatever using a Felt Pen Food Coloring and I cut the edges around using that craft scissors with a very fancy design, and I just let it stand up..If I have time, I decorate around the message with tiny flowers or scrolls..
I looks like a greeting card standing up on toop of the cake...

I always do this since I hate piping icing.. icon_smile.gif

You could print everything that you need to write on the cake in a nice looking font and then place the paper where you need to write. Then use a fine point needle to poke through the paper leaving little dots as a guide in order to transfer the font to the cake.

OOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, THAT'S COOL! I have goosebumbs because that sounds so cool! I hope I have enough time to do that and let the fondant dry. Maybe if I roll it thin enough. I don't however have time to make gumpaste and do it because gumpaste dries quicker!

I LOVE THE IDEA! Very very cool!!!

I'll still write some thing around the sides because I love the idea.

Okay, here's another ??? How would I go about "sponge painting" on the fondant? The cake is going to be covered with fondant and I would love to put that effect on this cake.

I love that idea with the writing in a different font. It will especially work because the cake is covered in fondant.

You can cover your 1/2" cake board with rolled fondant and then write the inscription around the cake using edible pen, royal or even your impression letters. I do that when people ask for something too long or there's already something as the cake topper.

Well, I write the message on the side most of the time. When I am at a loss for time, I cut a ribbon out of fondant and either pipe the message on, as in this example or I use a non-toxic marker or edible pen and write directly on the ribbon/banner.
Sea sponges that are thoroughly clean, worl best for sponging. You can use a regular makeup sponge or sponge, but you don't get quite the same effect. You can improve the effect by cutting little craters into these sponges.

I do a similar thing using almond paste, fondant, gumpaste, chocolate clay, or marzipan and these directions: http://www.cuisine-french.com/cgi/mdc/l/en/recettes/parchemin_ill.html

The size can be varied and they can be placed either on the cake or affixed into a standing position on the cake board. That's my favorite place to put 'em... that way they don't interfere with any other decorations.

Note: I marvel at the amount of verbiage that a customer thinks will fit on top of a cake! icon_rolleyes.gif

I sponge-painted my Halloween cake last week and I just used a clean paper towel that I scrunched up...it came out great! If you use 3 colors it will have a lot of depth....have fun!

These are all great ideas. I'm just wondering why you're making a 10" cake & 6" cake to serve 15 people, and thinking of adding a third tier? You've already got almost 3 times the servings they need. Just curious.
