Well, it happened to me last night, put the final touch on the cake and BAM, the cake slipped and fell upside down - SPLAT on the floor....I cried for an hour and cried while preparing another cake, up late, tired and finally finished one again. I am so tired at work today. I hope this never happens again or to anyone.

I dropped the same cake 3 times. Last time made me decide that it was time to have carpal tunnel surgery since I dropped them because I lost feeling in my hands.

The first time--I was taking it out of the oven and it flipped upside-down into the oven. After mixing up some more batter for the second attempt, I dropped the bowl with the batter all over the counter and floor The 3rd time, I safely got the cake out of the oven and was taking it to the freezer in the garage for a quick cool-down and I dropped it in the garage.

Fourth attempt at making this cake was successful. Then no cakes for about 5 months...2 months until I could schedule surgery and about 3 months to recuperate.

Cowgirl58, I am so sorry this happened to you! Although I have never dropped a cake or dish it has certainly always been a fear! I can empathize with you and will be glad for you to get off work today and go home and rest, thanking God you had time to bake another cake.
Cheer up! Sounds like you made a great recovery! thumbs_up.gif

Yep, I drop a cake it was in the wilton's plastic carrier and I did not have it snap tight and it fell and broke. So I understand every tear that you cried.

So sorry this happened to you. I have not, so far, dropped a decorated cake, but have had several disasters with breaking cakes as I flipped them out of the pan. It really sucks!! At least you persevered and got another cake done. Just get some rest this evening if you can.

cindy me too!!!! my superbowl cake i did this past weekend. i flipped it out of the pan perfectly fine. but then since it was 1am i decided i didnt want to come down after sleeping and see a hige crack (since the top had a big lump-stupid me did half vanilla half chocolate with two different recipes and consistencies) so i decided to flip it right side up.

Well how do you do that with a 1/2 sheet cake? i decided it would be smart to flip from the cooling rack onto the underside of the still HOT pan. When i did half the cake stuck to the pan and didnt slide so the other half broke off and landed EVERYWHERE thanksfully only one very tiny corner was on the floor (that i just got done cleaning).

I spent the next hour "spackling" the cake back together and it ended up being the best cake ive ever done. And my first chocolate trasfer (like the fbct). ill post a picture when i get it off my camera.

Dropping cakes is a royal P.I.T.A.

So sorry this happened to you, too bad you couldn't just say oh well and go on to bed. It is a bummer when you have to stay up past your bedtime and bake and decorate, then get up early and work.

The first cake I dropped was a sample and it flipped over on the counter. I brought it to work and let them eat it. The second was a 14 inch wedding cake layer. I had to bake that over, I put the broken cake in the freezer for DH and son to snack on.

I was delivering a wedding cake to a function hall. I had brought in the small 6" cake and set it on the table to assemble when I brought in the other two cakes. I then walked in with the stacked two tiers and gently placed it on the cake table, at the same time, the table collapsed!! Someone did not lock the legs in place! I let out this scream and all the servers in the hall just turned and looked in utter shock. No one said a word, it was so silent, until I said...."well, that stinks!" then everyone rushed over to help. Amazingly enough, the table cloth had puffed out and the cakes flipped exactly over and on top of it and they didn't smash. They were able to serve the cake! I then rushed back to my shop and quickly assembled a styrofoam 3 tiered wedding cake with the same design. It wasn't my fault, but I had to do something for this couple. This is why I always deliver wedding cakes two hours before the reception begins. You NEVER know what will happen!!! icon_rolleyes.gif

I've dropped a cake, a few times actually.I decided to use non stick spray on the cooling racks, cakes slid right off when I was moving them. On my way to class a car cut me off, the cake landed on the floor of my truck. Once I got home it fell upside down onto the table,( I almost tripped over my dog.) but it was still delicious. I found that a fondant covered cake makes it through a lot.

I did the cakes for my brother's wedding last June. The display "cake" was just that...a display...all styrofoam. No worries on that one.

But I made sheet cakes to serve to the guests. A friend of mine was helping me and she was getting the chocolate sheet cake out of the fridge when she accidentally dropped it. She FREAKED out and kept saying that I was going to hate her...lol..I kept my cool and played it off as best I could as I didn't want to upset her. Now, had I been alone, I would have sobbed like there was no tomorrow!!

It turned out that the cake never touched the floor anyway. It was on the cakeboard and it only fell about a foot to the floor. The only damage there was was a few cracks which were easily repaired with some buttercream!

Okay i just got my new order in of Magic Line pans and wanted to use my 1/2 sheet cake pan. Well I make up my cake mix and bake it 20 mins turn it bake it another 20 mins and I think a little more but cant remember. So I take the cake out let it cool somewhat. GO to flip it and take it out of the pan. No problem, right?! Wrong I go to flip back over so when it cools the rest of the way I can trim it up and level it. Well I had it on the plate. Put my parchment paper over the top and put my cooling rack on top of the paper. I go to flip it and guess what happened. It slid right off and landed on top on my stove. Well hubby & I try to get it on a cookie sheet to see if I can save it. WE get it to a big fight bc he said to me after I did that " I knew that was going to happen!" I say than why did you let me do that? He thought bc I do it all the time I knew what I was doing! Well NO I just got the pan in today and never baked a half a sheet cake. So anyways how do you all flip a half a sheet cake and NOT end up loosing it like I did? Thanks Megan

YES! I have, a wedding cake! It had to be the worse day of my life. Like Customcaker said, there wasn't a sound. All eyes were on me. I slipped on something I guess on the floor and fell with a 3 tier cake in my hands. If you run a search in Forums under cake distasters, it's titled "Opps! Wrong Event - Smash Cake Delivered To Wedding". I can laugh about it now, but I sure wasn't then or for days after.

I have never lost one but have come close when I was stupid enough to use the Wilton tilting turntable. I hated it and gave it back to my daughter who gave it to me as a gift. "With all apologies, you can have this back" I said.

I did flip a huge pizza that I had just made into the oven I had just cleaned that day. I started crying and my boyfriend just got a spatula and started putting it back on the pizza pan. His remark? "I don't think this is what they mean by hand-tossed pizza." With that I had to start laughing. Then my son eats his first piece and tells me it is the best pizza I have ever made.

Best thing to do if you destroy one is to make cake balls. If God gives you a lemon--make lenonade.

Yep....a stacked 3 tier with beautiful marbeled fondant on every tier, upside down on the floor. But the fondant kept the cake in so none touched the floor, only the fondant touched the floor. So...I dug out all the cake and made about 200 cake balls! Yay for cake balls! icon_lol.gifthumbs_up.gif

I haven't dropped a cake but i have had someone trip and hit the wedding cake off the table. When they told me the cake was on the floor I could have died right there and then! Thank the Lord it was all fruit cake covered with almond paste n fondant. The top cake was belly up but no damage!!! and the middle one had a slight crack which I was able to hide with flowers. The supports were shot though and i had to watch it like a hawk until the bride and groom got around to cutting it. It was the longest wait!!!

Here's my disaster courtesy the wilton tilting turntable icon_evil.gif . I spent three hours decorating this cake and just as I was putting the bottom border on it, it decided to tilt by itself. I guess I didn't lock it or something. I cried for at least half an hour. Thank GOD this cake was for a neighborhood pig pickin party and not a paid order. Needless to say, I haven't used that turntable since then. After I scraped it up off the floor, I just threw into the wilton carrier and took it to the party. I figured we could all just laugh over it but we actually ate the cake, LOL!! Gotta love good neighbors although I don't think I will ever hear the end of "Are you bringing another upside down cake?" icon_cool.gif

I made a special birthday cake as a surprise for a co-worker. I was taking it to the Lounge with everyone behind me, where she was waiting, having no idea we had a little party brewing. Well, I was on one side of the door, holding the cake, the door flies open, my arms fly up and I'm wearing the cake, smashed against my ample bosom. Surprise!!!! icon_lol.gif

Well, I hate to say it but I have dropped the ball cake, right off of the board while transporting.

Dropped the house cake, again while transporting.

Dropped the williams sonoma snowman cake, again while transporting.

I guess my cakes are OK as long as all of the parties are at my house! thumbs_up.gif

well........

a cute guy i used to date came in the shop...he was standing behind the customer...(i was wondering...what's he doing here?)...it made me nervous....

and i dropped the customers cake on my foot.

i looked at the frog shaped cake sitting on my foot...the customers talking to each other not realizing what i'd done...

and cute guy behind them.

i wanted to get in a time machine and go back one minute...WHAT A NIGHTMARE.

of course later i was teased mercilessly...that the frog just jumped out on my foot.

but

i must say i've had brilliant saves like one december i was taking a full sheet out to the customers car...i slipped on the ice onto my knees...BUT SAVED THE CAKE!

I spent hours on the cake below, for a co-worker who had seen other cakes I had done for other people and was excited for months before her birthday that I was doing a cake for her. She has a bengal cat, so that is what inspired the design. I had left my cake container at work because of a previous cake that week, so I had to put it in one of those glass dome cake display things. Then as I was pulling out of my parking garage at home, it fell on the floor of my car. Completely destroyed. I felt so bad. Now that I have learned some new skills, I'm going to make her a killer cake this year to make up for it! She was happy that I took a picture and sent it to all of her friends saying "Look at my birthday cake!" regardless! It kinda bummed me out and I stopped doing cakes for a few months icon_smile.gif

When I worked at a bakery, I dropped a customer's cake when he arrived to pick it up...I had to drop everything and decorate him another cake! I dropped an entire bowl of strawberry cake batter in my kitchen floor.

And...just recently, I had to deliver a full sheet cake (18x24") to a function at my kids' school. Well, the event just happened to be on the same day as the 2nd grade's Christmas program and there was no parking! I ended up having to park a block and a half from where I needed to take the cake. Huge box, heavy cake, windy day! My arms were so tired trying to carry that thing and the wind caught it. Luckily, there was a fence nearby and I was able to catch it before it hit the ground, and balanced it on the fence until I could get a better grip to carry it the other 100 yards to it's final destination. Needless to say, I did inform them that if there was no parking someone would have to meet me at the door next time ready to take the cake!!!
