You can fold the top of the bag over the edges of your hand and then put the icing inside. The grab the edges and go!

Cuff the bag. I always turn about the upper forth of the bag out to make a cuff then spoon the icing in. Then undo the cuff and squeeze the icing down being careful not to let the icing ooze back up and out the wrong end. Another thing to keep in mind is that you don't have to fill the bags completely. I used to do that so I wouldn't have to add more icing as often, but it just ends up making a big mess...not to mention it's harder to control the bag when it's really full. icon_smile.gif

I actually put my couple and tip on and then drop in into a glass drinking glass...fold the top of the bag over and pull it down kinda tight. Fill the bag and then pop it out of the glass.
Hope I described this right...

I use the same methods as above but an old pringles can washed out ( of course) is a great size to hold the bag for you!

I actually don't put my icing directly into the bag.

I plop my buttercream down onto a piece of plastic wrap and then roll it up, twisting both ends, kind of like a candy in a wrapper.
Next, I drop that into my icing bag, pull one of the twisted end of the plastic wrap through the coupler and snip it off with a pair of scissors.
Then I put the tip on the coupler as normal and it's ready to go. When I'm done, I just pull out the remaining icing that's still wrapped in the plastic wrap and toss! No mess!

PurplePetunia you must not use disposable bags?! I do, b/c they make life simpler but you've got an interesting idea!

Are the Wilton bags reusable? Or you have to dispose of them?

PurplePetunia, I would never have thought to put frosting in a bag this way. I will be frosting a cake later today and can't wait to try it! Every once in a while a person gets a really good tip and I think this is one of those times. I hate the clean up of the bags, but only like to use the disposable for my royal. Thank you so much for the idea!

AWSOME TIP! Often I use Ziploc bags, but it happens on and off that they burst on the seem when I squeeze to much... BIG mess. And I also hate cleaning out the Icing bag

It depends on what Wilton bags you are using. The white ones with pink lettering (usually pink) are resuable. The Clear ones are considered disposable, but have heard of people cleaning and using them a few times.

Hope this helps.

WOW! you got lot's of good advice. I am with cakesoncall.
Not to sure about the frosting in plastic wrap I like short cuts not extra work. It's a good idea. Less mess? But I like to fill and GO

I cuff the pastry bag over my hand and then use a large rubber spatula to put the icing in the bag. Then squeeze it down to get out some of the air and then add more icing...no more then 12 to 2/3's full!
