Candy Clay

You can use either chocolate candy melts or white chocolate (vanilla) for this recipe, both are very good. I’ve used this to make figurines, flowers, and more recently a fan! I also have a video on youtube showing how I make it:

Candy Clay

Ingredients

  • 16 oz. Candy Melts (also called ‘Flavored Candy Wafers’)
  • 1/3 c. light corn syrup

Instructions

  1. Line a small pan with wax paper and set aside. Melt candy either using a double boiler (see video) or on low power in the microwave. Once melted and smooth remove from heat and stir in corn syrup. It will look like it’s seizing, this is how it’s supposed to look. Pour into prepared pan and allow to cool to room temperature. Wrap in plastic or place in a sealable plastic bag and allow to ‘rest’ overnight.
  2. To use, break off small pieces at a time and knead until softened. You can use icing colors at this point, just knead them into the softened clay. Store in an airtight container, this will keep fresh for up to 3 weeks. For examples of how this looks, please see my pictures, all my figurines are made using this.

Can you use anything other than "candy melts" in this recipe? My daughter is allergic to peanuts, and I have yet to find a brand of candy melts that would be safe for her.

I might be late or someone else answered. I don't think Merckins has peanut oil or anything in it... I don't see any peanut related in the ingredients for the light cocoa wafers.

I have not tried covering a cake with this recipe yet, but I know other people have used candy clay (their own recipes) for covering cakes.

can you roll this out with a rolling pin and cut designs in it with like cookie cutters and things and it will dry hard and not be limpy and flexible?

How far in advance do you need to make decoratiions to have it harden enough to hold a form. My son wants a Monster Mutt cake for his birthday on Wedsday and I could not make any of the non icing decorations before tomorrow and OF course the ears need to be semi hard to look right.

Thats ok. It is good to know since my niece wants a castle cake for her birthday next month. I ended up using choclate fondant which worked ok.

I have tried using recipes like this and I hope someone can help me with my problem. It seems like the candy clay will get hard; but when i try to use the choc it's all soft and you really can't do much with it. If you leave it then it will turn hard again, but I have to have it at a consistency that I can mold and design without it being too soft. If someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong I would appreciate it!

cakebug0362...you might be working in a room that is too warm or your hands may be too warm. Try keeping a zip lock bag full of ice nearby to cool your hands on while working with it. Some people just have warmer hands and it really does make a difference when working with this stuff. Hope this helps.
