This icing recipe is also known as Poor Man’s Frosting and I LOVE this with “Sarah’s Red Velvet Cake TWEAKED,” which can be found here in the recipe section of Cake Central. This is a mildly sweet, non-crusting icing, much like a 7-minute frosting.
Mary Kay Icing
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup whole milk
3/4 cup white vegetable shortening, such as Crisco
1 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup butter, softened
2 tsp vanilla
Instructions
In a saucepan, add the flour and 1/4 cup of milk and whisk until smooth. Add the remaining milk and whisk until well combined. Cook over medium heat until mixture is thickened. Cool completely.
-
- In a mixing bowl, cream the butter, shortening, and sugar on medium speed for several minutes. Add the vanilla and mix until combined. Add the cooled flour/milk mixture and beat on high for 5 minutes or until smooth and creamy. Spread on cooled cake.

If you are wanting a frosting that is not sweet at all, this may be for you. It tasted like cream to me.

Does this icing need to be refrigerated once it’s on the cake?
