Italian Wine Donut cookies

This is a recipe very easy to make. In Italy we bake this donut cookies during the cold Winter. We use to serve the cookies with a glass of warm spiced red wine or a sweet Vinsanto. Many people like dipping the cookies into the wine before eat them. It gives good time with family and friends close to a fireplace having after dinner conversation.
I hope you’ll enjoy this Italian recipe.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups plain white flour
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup oil (corn, peanuts, sunflower, olive, …)
  • 1 cup red wine
  • a little pinch of salt
  • some granulated brown sugar for decorating

Instructions

  1. In a bowl mix together flour, sugar and salt then add the red wine and mix it with a spoon. Soon add the oil. After all you have to work well the dough with your hands. It hasn’t to be sticky. Cover with plastic wrap and let it rest 30 minute into the fridge.
Sift a veil of flour on a clean wooden surface, take a part of your dough and roll it into a thin (half inch) but long rope. Cut a short part of your rope, turn it around and form a donut about 2 inches diameter. If the dought is too sticky sift more flour on your working surface. When all of your donuts are ready, gently press the upper side surface into the granulated brown sugar, reverse it and put the donut into the pan for baking.
About 20 minute at 370°F will be ok, depending from your owen.
Preserve cookies into a tin box. They will be fresh for many days
    Greetings from Italy

Yes DFND, if you prefer you may substitute red wine with white. The red wine gives a more tasting aroma but even white is ok. Cookies will have more delicate tasting.
