I am also looking to make a handbag cake....looking to make a gucci one and would appreciate some advice also if anyone has any...
Thanks
I make them all the time...my most requested cakes. Depending on the size you can use just about any pan. I use an 11x15 inch pan and cut into 4...stack, dowel and carve until it looks like a purse. If you are looking to do more of a barrel type purse (round) you can use 4 or 5 rounds cut off a small piece of the bottom so that they don't roll and stick a dowel into them from end to end. That way you won't have to do much carving. I'll try to attach some pics....
THANKS I ALSO WAS INTERESTED IN THIS INFO, BECAUSE MY FIRST PURSE CAKE WAS A DISASTER.
Thanks soo much everyone, but I'd like to see a step by step processed tutorial for these 3-D cakes for a better idea, vs. pics. Thanks again so much and anyone have a tutorial for that?? This cake is due soon and need a little more info! Thanks
Jenifer
I've made 2 purse cakes, but didn't write a tutorial, however...

here's a great video on youtube, there are 2 parts but it's pretty good...
That was really cool to see...soo helpful!
know how she made the actual cake? Think I could just carve a square cake diagonally and cut them in half..put them together backwards....and trim the top so it's flat instead of pointy...wdyt?
If you don't want to carve you can easily just slice a flat bottom on a two layer 6" round cake and stand it on the flat bottom then cover it in fondant and decorate it to look like a purse. That's all I did with the chanel purse in my photos and I didn't even need to dowel it to make it stand upright - extremely easy to make
