Straw Hat Gondola Style

Straw Hat Gondola Style on Cake Central

Made this for my mom's friend for her 80th birthday. She asked for this kind of hat because it is the kind she was known for wearing. Easy overall, but 3 hours of piping! :( 3-layer yellow 10" w/lemon curd on a 14" yellow w/no filling. All buttercream. Real ribbon. Also made a white chocolate plaque with a scroll chocolate mold on top as her H. B-day message. Wish I had a better pic. Cake was a huge hit.

I used a combination of ivory, golden yellow, and brown. Mostly ivory -- a tad the yellow and brown. It wasn't striped in the bag -- it was just the difference in the color consistency as I continued to pipe. As I got to the end of each bag (I used 8" bags) the color actually got darker. Then I'd start a new bag, and it was light again. I knew it would do this because it did it on a practice cake I did, so I used the same technique here. I liked the effect it created. Thank you for the compliments. ...

critique member: your basketweave is impressive! I haven't seen anything like it! I would've like to see a fondant ribbon and maybe add a couple of flowers where the ribbon has criss crossed...daisy or something yellow. The red wrapping for the board doesn't really add anything to the cake...maybe a thicker board with a different color wrapping or just white to make the cake pop! This cake is really nicely done!

Critique subgroup member: Hmm I did a straw hat also. Yours is much more impressive! But since there is not much in the design they both seem sort of boring after the initial idea is created. LOL But that is just my issue and not yours. Your board is too small - should be 2 to 3 inches bigger and the red conflicts with the design taking away the hats importance. Belive it or not the ribbon should be tied once in the back. I am a stickler for researching things. Your basket weave is superb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Critique subgroup member: I see that I already commented on this cake before :). From a critique stand point, it's still incredible detail for the piping. I would have used a fondant ribbon, but I am one of those people who likes to use as many edible things as possible on a cake. Other than that, I love the whole thing

Critique subgroup member: your basketweave is impressive - what a lot of work! I agree about the board being too small. The ribbon doesn't look quite "finished" - maybe a bow or some flowers? My hand hurts from thinking about all that basketweave! :)

critique subgroup member: very pretty cake! for me, the basketweave looks small for the size of cake, I am wondering if a larger tip would have been a bit more proportioned??? again this could be me??
