thanks for all the nice compliments kassie...the top was just fondant, I cut a little cake circle to put over the hole in the top of the bowl and then stuck fondant on top of it.
This cake actually took me an hr. and a half from start to finish!!! From the time I started carving the cakes til I was done brushing on the silver, and that includes the 5 minutes I gave the scrolls to dry before brushing on the luster dust!! It was so quick and easy...really just about the simplest cake I've ever made...I think you should all try it if you've been wanting too they're really not as hard as they seem.
Wow!!! This cake looks like a real gumball machine. I'm new to this website. Are the details on how all of these cakes are made printed anywhere? GREAT JOB!!

not sure if they are or not.......I just stacked up 3-6" round cakes and kinda carved them so they sloped out as I went further down...covered in mmf and added some lines to the mmf with the back of my knife and then cut the rectangular piece for the face plate thingy out of white mmf and piped on white royal icing, let it set up a little then brushed the whole plate with silver luster dust and clear vanilla...oh and I used a small round cookie cutter and cut out the coin slot just went through the first
and second layer of fondant all the way to the icing on the cake, removed both circles and just replaced the top white one and then painted it silver as well. Then I molded the little knob and stuck two toothpicks into the back of it and stuck it in there where I wanted it and painted it silver...doweled the cake set on the bowl and wrapped a snake of fondant around the base of the bowl to secure it and that's it....it was very simple
Great job! Very neat. I can't wait to try this...Is the top rice crispies or cake or something else?
This is adorable! I love it. ;-D
