I put one square on, iced it, then put the next on (all the bottom row first). Then patted them as smooth as I could. They did not completely smooth. Then I did the next row up and so on. When I was done, I went back and did the nubs where I thought they should be.

I just used a #10 tip and made it high, when it was a little bit dried, I tapped it flat. Worked great!
