Made this for fun....to practice smoothing my icing. I used the 1/2butter, 1/2 crisco recipe, what is a good method for smoothing this icing? I have no problems with the Wilton recipe, but have not good responses to the taste. However, this recipe most people seem to like? I've tried the Viva method, but the icing seems too sticky. Would the hot spatula method work? TFL! Christine

Very pretty cake! Did you let the icing crust before using the Viva paper towel to smooth it? To me it's easier than the hot spatula method, but everyone is different. I know some people use both methods. Good luck!

You have to wait at least 15 minutes for the icing to crust and then use the viva trick. If the icing hasn't crusted, it will make a bigger mess!

This is so cute. I like your colors, they are very sweet! Try throwing it in the fridge for a few minutes, then do the Viva. Hot spatula will help too.

I use wax paper over the top of my cake then use the roller over the wax paper. My first cake was very smooth from this method.

I always use the paper towel method and it works well, as for recipe i use 1 lb powder sugar, 1 cup crisco 3-4 Tbs water, 1tsp clear vanilla and 1/2 tsp of clear butter extract everyone loves this. hope u like it
