This story was SO romantic! Get this....the bottom tier is artificial so that I could hollow it out (like a bagel) and place a chunk of the actual wedding cake from the bride's parent's inside it! How cool is that?? They gave me the wedge of 35 year-old fruitcake, which I wrapped well in a few layers of Saran wrap, then carved out a wedge in the styrofoam cake dummy, fit it inside and then iced as usual with fondant.
So...it symbolizes their marriage built upon the strength of the parents' marriage.

What a sentimental story!! And the cake is beautiful. I always love your work!

Oh yeah, before I get 100 questions about the state of 35 year-old fruitcake...it was totally normal looking, as if it were only a year or two old. No gooey moldy mess or anything. (Believe me, I was afraid of what I would be getting too!! ) It came frozen and looked and smelled fine. I wrapped it really well in plastic wrap though, just to make sure nobody accidentally ate it!!

I love the story....how symbolic - I'm not that sentimental!! I love the design too...this colour combo is fantastic - don't know if I like your burgundy one or this one better!

love it!

I did screw up though. I had made the white gumpaste monogram plaque to fit around the 8" cake, thinking the 8" was a chocolate brown tier....but whoops, it only fit around the white tier! DOH!

cool cake and what a neat story! Although it still doesn't make me regret that we ate our top tier the next day and didn't save it! It was yummy! I wonder if other cakes would have looked as good 35 years later.... fruitcake is something special in itself... heck it's decorated 2 weeks ahead sometimes before anyone eats it! I wonder if you could still eat it now.... after all it's been preserved in alcohol and a freezer right?? hmmm - nah I think I'll pass :)
antonia74 1/7/07 at 1:17am
ugh, no...it was older than any of us, so I'd definitely pass too!
