Alice In Wonderland

I made this cake for my sister's 24th Birthday. The bottom two cakes are fake becuase it would be too much cake. All the characters are edible and were made from modelling paste and gumpaste. It was hard to capture all the cake in one photo so hopefully the collage is easy to follow!

thank you, the stone wall i made by impressing this matt I had with a cobblestone pattern and then i just shaded a bit with some gray and black for depth.

on

it's so real looking...as though you made each stone by hand and attached them together. I never would have guessed it was done by a matt!

on

delithra I used a baby face mold to give me the basic shape and worked from there, maybe try that next time to get the detail you desire...best of luck! PS I just noticed...i meant liquid gelatin not glucose!! lol

on

thanks..altho unfortunately i havent seen push molds here in malaysia. will get them online from sugarcraft. was wondering how liq. glucose crusted to look like gelatine wings!! haha...the toes on your fairies are amazing! can't wait for more pics from you!!

on

it was a typo, the glucose is actually meant to say gelatin! i just made a wire frame and then I diped it into the gelatin mixture (like when you make soap bubbles) and then just let it dry slightly, then dip again untill they are thick enough not to tear.

on

thanks jelena, you have exceptional talent and i think you should publish books ! I tried the gelatine wings too and i had dipped them only once so they broke, thanks for the info. i found the baby face mold here. just got it!! yay! if my fairy is half as nice as yours it would be a reason for celebrations!

on

:D Thanks delithra, that's super nice of you!! If you need any tips or info while make those fairies feel free to e-mail me no problem. I don't know how much I can offer seeing as I kind of wing everythign I make ha ha but I can definetly let you know what tools I used and how I made mine!

on

sure i'd be more than happy to write down the steps but It's all really free-styled and I didn't use any molds so a lot is left to your creativity...if you still want me to contact me via the private message and i'll reply!

on

wow- I am so jealous!! What beautiful fairies!!! Can you tell me how you did the wings? I am doing a cake in 3 days & I would LOVE to know how you did the wire-dipping in gelatine....my email is [email protected] THANK YOU!!! :)

This cake is so absolutely amazing!!! Your characters are so accurate and well done! I love all the touches - the trees, and rose bushes around the pillars, the tea set!!!

on

Hi Lolotte, thanks! I made it within about 3 weeks - but I'm a student w/o a job so my three weeks are only dedicated to the cake - so realistically with other obligations I would advise to start at least a month to have enough time without rushing!

Somone on another cake forum just posted a link to this cake, so it's the first time i have seen it. Just FABULOUS!

on

Spectacular! My daughter teaches an Alice in Wonderland unit in her 5th grade class. I might have to try a smaller, simpler version for them. Thanks for the beautiful work.

on

Wow.... What a wonderland! I know you sister was thrilled! So much talent...so much! I just love the Queen of Hearts expression! Two thumbs WAY up...I'd give you three but i haven't another ;-D

on

:) Thanks to everyone for your supportive comments. For those who asked me about how I made the figures it was all done by hand and no molds were used. I made it a while ago so its really hard for me to summarize how I did it since most of it was done on a whim! If anyone wants to know anything specific I would be more than happy to pick my brain for them..email me at [email protected] just put ALICE or something in the subject so I know. Thanks again ;)

Every single one of your figures is absolutely perfect, and then combined together with all the details on the cake...Gosh, what could I possibly add that hasn't already been said?!! ;-D ;-D ;-D

Holy Cow! This is amazing! I love the scene with Alice looking down the rabbit hole. And I really appreciate the fact you told us how long it took you. It really put it in perspective.

on

WOW!! What a wonderful cake. I love the details and how the cake is telling a story. You're truly an artist!

on

Any tips on making the characters? are you self taught or did someone show you how to make the characters, I can't believe how real they look - Great Job!

on

Hello Babycakes99, I tought myself how to make characters etc..so the techniques might take longer time and more luck than someone who's formally educated in that sort of thing...I basically look at a picture or the idea I have in my head and I try to visualize it in shapes and layers. From there you just sort of look at your tools and build one shape and one layer at a time..that makes it less overwhelming. It also helped me to look at some polymer clay modelling books, although its hard to directly take

on

cntd...techniques from the books since polymer clay is so different than gumpaste...but give it a try you never know until you do..if youre interested in any specific steps let me know id be happy to share what I did! good luck :)

I LOVE THIS CAKE!!!!! One of my favorite fairy tales is Alice in Wonderland so theirs one reason why it's so nice. But you also did fantastic with the characters and their emotions! :D 8O

on

holy moly!!! I know this cake was uploaded a long time ago, but this is my first time seeing it and I have to say this is the best cake I have ever seen. Your characters look like store bought figurines. this is amazing. your a certainly talented in many ways.

on

Jelena, Your work is beautiful. I'm playing with figues and I wanted to know about your use of gumpaste and modeling paste, is there a reason you used them over fondant? Did you add flavoring to the pastes? Which paste did you use for which figures or are they a mixture of both?

on

This is fantastic. The characters are beyond perfect!! So its been more than a year now...did you get a job in a bakery or start your own? You could sell your figures to cake decorators (start local and branch out on the internet).

on

Thanks writway for your positive feedback :D ...no I actually haven't made a cake since this becuase I've been going away in the summer which is when I used to make them! But I only did this for fun..I'm a Science student so no, no bakery jobs either!

on

All I could do was shake my head when I saw this cake! It is the most incredible cake I have ever seen! You have a special talent! I wish you were my sister!

on

WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL attention to detail. i hope you dont mind that i made a version of these characters which were greatly inspired by yours. thanks for sharing- your cake is fantastic!
