7-Tier

7-Tier on Cake Central

Massive cake, about 9 or 10 feet tall for a new venue with 40 foot ceilings in Toronto. My first time using pillars!!

The dimensions were 6"/8"/10"/12"/14"/16"/18" on a 22" silver plateau stand. I hollowed out a wedge from the bottom 18" tier and filled it with a carved fit piece of real layer cake. I then fondant-iced that massive 18" cake dummy too with the slice inside...so when they did their cutting at night, guests would think the cake actually was real.

All of it is styrpfoam cake dummies covered in real fondant icing. I did cut out a piece of the styrofoam and insert a real wedge of cake into the bottom 18" tier though, before I covered it in fondant. So, when they cut into that section, it looked as though the cake was all real.

I have just added a photo of this cake without the flowers to the Gallery. You can see how it is put together, but it's all cake plates and pillars....and stiff royal icing!

WOW, WOW, WOW!!! What an accomplishment! I can't get up enough nerve to try ONE set of pillars!

Well it's beautiful! When/if I ever get a tall cake like this - I'm calling YOU to help me set it up! I will need your height and nerves of steel!

I had to take a ladder. Even at 6 feet tall myself, it was a scary reach!! The top of my head only came to the 4th tier.

man, not only do you have amazing talent but you're like a genius and a magician too......you mean you thought enough to have a portion be real cake so when they did the cake cutting ceremony it looked like it was all cake!! Oh man, you're talented and tricky, just brilliant

this whole concept was a bit insane for me to grasp . . . but damn your work is incredible! So I assume that they just serve from sheets?

OMG! WOW! I too have never used pillars. But than again I have not made anything bigger than a three tier cake. I was wondering if you could email me the instructions on how you worked with the pillars. what holds them up? do you use royal icing to make sure there in place?
