To make the 5 inch diameter sailor hats, I used the Wilton ball cake pan, it is two half spheres. You could also use a half ball candy mold. Dust with cornstarch first then cover the half sphere/ball with a thick(1/4") piece of gumpaste. Let that dry. Pop it off. Then roll out a 2-3" strip of gumpaste, use the PME quilting tool or PME Designer Wheeler(www.globalsugarart.com has it) to simulate two rows of stitching on top of strip, then attach(water or gum glue) strip to dried gumpaste half sphe...

With a bigger brim and some stitching on the top the cover could pass for the real thing in an inspection! ;-D
