Princess Pillow Cake

Princess Pillow Cake on Cake Central

This was my special cake of the weekend. It was for my 6 year old niece. I've been wanting to try a pillow cake for a long time and finally got to do one. The base is a 8" round, the middle cake is a 9" square cut to shape, and the top is a 8" square pan. The tiara was made out of gumpaste and hand painted. The whole cake was luster dusted and the pearls were gumpaste.

Cute! I have to do one next week... How do you get the quilted effect. I'm familiar w/ the diamond imprint, but looks like yours is "extra"-quilted...?

Thanks for the comments. I cut a strip of paper about an inch wide and used that as my pattern. I then used the smallest ball tool to indent each cross line then used one of the other tools to make the pressed in look....or whatever you call it. When I put the luster dust on - it really gave the cake more depth.

Thank you all!!!! This was a fun cake to do, I was very pleased when it was all done. Spunkywan, the luster dust is put on dry. I actually used a violet pearl luster dust and that gave it a purple shimmer.

Thanks marilenacd, no school, I'm basically self taught and learn a lot from this web site. I followed instructions from Cakes to Dream On by Collett Peters for cutting/stacking the pillows. Don't say you can't - it just takes practice! Every cake I do, I try to learn a new technique. Never be scared to just try it!
