"fall"ing Roses on Cake Central

I made this cake as a styrofoam, and had to use royal icing, does anyone have any tips for making it look smooth?

I have heard that a lot of people wait untill it is hardened and use sandpaper. I bet a damp sponge would word too...that's what I do to smooth out my drywall compound. I bet the same technique could apply to royal! I think your cake looks great, by the way!

If is any help, I have used the white paper & fondant smoother after it crusts a bit. Paper towel method doesn't work w/Royal Icing. At least, it hasn't for me. I am kinda green @ this, but have been doing cakes for 2yrs as a "fun job" & just got into wedding cakes this year.
