Lambeth/australian Technique

This is my original creation using a variety of Lambeth and Australian techniques. I took Best of Show and center stage on the Best of Show table (signifying judges favorite out of the five Best of Show cakes chosen from different categories) in San Diego's Confections on Parade Cake Show in LaJolla, California in 2007. I like this photo better than the other I uploaded. TFL :-) Special thanks to Kerry Vincent, Wendy Kromer and Shirley Wilson for your invaluable advice in helping me create something I thought was out of my reach.

This is with royal but can also be done with buttercream! Definately!!! I've done it on a few of my sheet cakes for practice leading up to this cake. It's fun to do because the end result is really pretty.

Did you take a class for this? It's quite lovely. How long did all this decorating work take after fondant covered? Looks like it requires so much patience. Love it. Love bridgework but kind of in awe of it at this point.

Wow. I love it . Thanks for showing the work in progress. I would love to learn this. Be sure to show the finished product. Great.

Thank you so much! It's really easy once you get the hang of it. It is very time consuming though, there is no doubt about that. It also takes a steady hand and a paintbrush!

So impressive, could you please tell all of us how many hours you actually had making this cake. It's just georgeous!

I spent probably 70 total hours on the cake. I took my time doing it though because my hubby is deployed and I have two monsters I mean boys at home running rampant. I spread the decorating across 1 1/2 months. I took one week and two week breaks. Sometimes just days for drying time. You really can not rush this technique!

Just exquisite - can't imagine how many hours it took - you are amazing. Many congratulations on this masterpiece.

Oh WOW!!! I have been waiting to see the finished product and just WOW!!!! It's beautiful. Did you place in the competition??

Simply amazing. I wouldn't be able to pipe stringwork even if my life depended on it. Gorgeous! Big congrats to you!! :)

I just bought the 1934 Lambeth Method of Decorating book! Got it for $2.50 at a used book store. What consistency was frosting for this? Did you use royal or buttercream?

Good lord! This is just awesome. You must have the patience of a saint and the steadiest hands known to mankind!!!!

This is awesome! your stringwork is perfect! I'm not putting it in my favorites - why aggravate myself? Did you make it for an occasion? If not, I hope it's a dummy!

it's amazing!!! I'm here w/my 2 yo daughter next to me. she says mommy i liiiiike the cake. lol she has a good eye at a young age.

Thank you everyone! I spent about three days on that tier alone. That is mostly drying time! Of all the techniques on the cake, that tier was the easiest for me to do. It is something I have done before so I was happy to buzz right through a tier!! :)

Critique Group Member: Wow ~ what incredible stringwork. I would love to try the Lambeth technique someday. Those oval striped thingies on the sides are incredibly perfect. Wow! No critique here.

on

In case everyone doesn't get a chance to check out the other photos of this cake (which I recommend you do :D ), those "oval thingies" are called Cusion Lattice

on

Wow, it's very beauitiful! Now can you imagine doing this all the time? Do you suppose ole Mr. Lambeth had a lot of orders for this sort of thing> It's the most intimidating style/technique I've ever seen for cakes. You did a wonderful job!

on

That is a true work of art. I'd put it in my fav's if there was even a teeny chance I'd come close but no way. Belated Congrats.
