When I made the trunk, I poked little holes about the size of a toothpick all around the top section. The leaves were rolled out on wire. The night before the party I glued the wired leaves to the holes in the trunk with royal icing, added the coconuts (had to hold these in place a while) and some strings in brown royal icing. Left the whole thing upright with the dowel stuck in a foam block and supported by cans so it wouldn't tip over, and I went to bed praying it would hold. (IT WAS 3 AM!)
