In community album: Children's Birthday Cakes
A zoo half-cake for my daughter's 2nd birthday. I wanted something small enough to take WITH us to the zoo, but I didn't want cupcakes, so I cut an 8" cake in half. Pirouette cookies around the outside, fondant decorations, yellow cake w/chocolate BC frosting. On this cake I learned how much sturdier Wilton fondant is for figures; the panda is the only one made of MMF and he never dried! Next time I'll check out gum-tex.

That is just adorable! I love the expressions on their faces. Reminds me of Wallace and Kromit characters. Very well done.

Very cute! I like how all the other animals are looking at the panda bear as if to say, what's the matter with you, why aren't you dry yet???

LOL! That is a hilarious comment about the panda . They are saying "why did your belly get so saggy? You were supposed to be round like us!" Thanks for the comments, you made my day!

Those are the cutest animals! Did you look at a picture of animals or cartoon characters?
ceshell 8/15/06 at 5:38pm
Thanks so much for the great feedback. They were truly a gas to make. I did a search on "zoo" here on CC and looked at other cakes with animals. I didn't take notes or print anything out, I just sort of filed the info in my brain and then went downstairs and "went for it". I am so happy I resisted the urge to add smiles to all of them; I think they show more character w/just the eyes. (Well, actually you can see I pressed in a smile on the monkey but I thought he needed a face.)
