Just finished this for my son...had some issues with the fins because I didn't have time to do them right so they aren't all dry and the decorations smudged but I'll know for next time. All but the fins is buttercream.
Thanks all! I used the 3D egg pan and then when I leveled the bottom, made it to where the small part slanted down...then put it together and then cut a little away from the front so the body curves in a little. Made the fins the day before but should have started earlier as they are not too sturdy.
They were made using fondant that I let dry, but I didn't let them dry enough, also they were pretty heavy...next time I would try thinner fondant or maybe even gum paste.
Thanks. How much time should I allow myself to make this? I've done a few cakes but nothing this nice, and I've never worked w/ fondant or gum paste. Thanks for answering my questions.
It was just for my own son so it was last minute, the fondant was only made a couple days beforehand. You should give it probably a week for gum paste and maybe that long or a bit longer for fondant. A quicker way might be to draw a pattern on wax paper and pour tinted candy melts/almond bark onto it and onto sucker sticks to help it stay in.
