Taking A Break!

Taking A Break! on Cake Central

This lady became a grandmother 2 weeks earlier than planned. Her birthday party was meant to come first. However, you can't see from this picture really but instead of a holiday brochure in her hand which I was asked to do, I changed it to a "photo" of her new grandson. I also added some baby items to her laundry basket.

What IS it with you guys in the UK?! You are SO incredibly skilled with the fondant modeling. This is absolutely amazing-and-incredible. Not to mention clever, creative, magnificent ... I could go on and on.

This was a 10" madeira sponge cake with the design created onto a cake card and stuck with a little royal icing and piped around the card to hide the seal I charged £75 for this effort. What's that in dollars?? Am I too expensive do you think?

I don't know what that is in dollars, but would like to know!!! You did a marvelous job!! WOW!!! It's hard to take your eyes off of it!!!

It's about $138.00 US dollars. (What currency is that exactly Euros? Pounds? either way it is about that much) I think you could get more!!!! Your cakes are wonderful!! Are all the people done with molds?

I am from Scotland so I was quoting Pounds. I am constantly hearing that I don't charge enough for my time. I think it's time I had a better look at myself! I don't use any molds. All of my work is hand crafted. Glad you like my work. My website is www.lorraine-icingonthecake.co.uk if you want to see more. Cheers!

Just amazing! How long did it take you to sculpt everything? Do you wait until the bottom item is dry before adding the next item?

The bench was made first but as you can see from this, I didn't leave it long enough before I started putting the character onto it as it is starting to dip in the middle. All the other items were made and left to dry on sponges and then glued in position on the cake. I left the body of this person to dry for a couple of days then I did the head and arms. It depends how a character is placed and the weight of it if you can get away with doing it all at once.

I've only done a few items and I love that they can be done ahead of time. You've inspired me to do more and to be more creative. Thanks so much for posting your beautiful pictures and being so generous with your technique.
