My Old Man's A Miner!

My Old Man's A Miner! on Cake Central

This cake was for a lovely man who spent most of his working life in the coal mines. The cake was made of fruit which is a traditional Scottish cake steeped in brandy. No wonder the miner on the cake was on his backside!

CMC (Carboxy Methyl Cellulose) is a man made gum powder which is used in the food industry. It firms up the paste and makes it pliable and easy to use. I buy mine from Squires Kitchen who have a shop online.

Actually, this type of face isn't my usual style and I did it this was for quickness to be honest. The rest of the model is my own thing as it was based on the person who the cake was for. Karen Davies (book writer) was the inspiration for the simplicity in the face.

It's hand crafted from sugarpaste. I think that's the equivelant to your fondant. I add CMC powder to strenghten the paste and turn it into modelling paste.

Great! Since viewing your cakes I've been doing a little planning in my mind and want to give this a try for the holidays (Christmas), when we go to my inlaws for brunch. I better start practicing!
