Wavy Flag Cake

Wavy Flag Cake on Cake Central

This is a cake I made for a friend to take into her office to drum up some business for me. It's a butter poundcake with almond buttercream. This is my first star piping cake and I didn't realize how long it takes to do this!

Star piping is my absolute favorite way to decorate. It gives a really uniform look to a cake instead of smoothing with a spatula. You did a great job!!

Thanks for the compliments. For those of you that sell cakes, what would you charge for a cake like this? I don't think you get paid for your time when you do a cake like this.

Your cake came out great. I did this same cake for a family reunion this weekend. May I ask what coloring you used for your blue? Mine never got as dark I wanted.

crp7, Thanks for the compliment. I used Wilton's royal blue icing, but I think this picture is a little deceiving because the blue is darker in the picture than the actual color. I did use quite a bit of blue though. Have you posted your picture? Would love to see itl

I will post mine (although I like yours better). It seems I am always decorating my cakes at midnight and by that time I am just ready to be done!

Crp7, I know what you mean by being up late. I was up til 2:00 am working on this cake to see if I could do these stars because I had a lady that wanted a race car cake. I wasn't sure if I could do the stars, so I practiced on this cake. I called the next morning to say I could do the cake, but the lady already had ordered another cake. So, I lost out on my first order. Atleast now I know I can do stars, but it just takes a long time. I do have the triple star tip and will use it next time.

I started out with the triple star but I think that is bigger than they intended for this cake but it went faster than I thought it would and I think the slightly larger stars look fine. I still had to go back with a single star tip to fill in gaps.

Crp7, yes, next time I will also use the triple star tip on this cake. The stripes were so narrow that I didn't even think the triple star would work, but since you used it and yours came out fine, I'll use it next time. Thanks.
