No, I did not use a dowel, however that probably would have been a great idea. I did end up "doweling" it for travel to it's destination however. I used several wooden skewers and stuck them down thru the ball the whole way thru the cake to the cardboard to keep it from tipping during the long drive to the birthday party. I did place dowels under the cake and used a round cake board to hold the ball, however.

The grass was made with tip 233 ... the grass making tip. It is very easy! Good luck.

can you tell me what pan you used for the ball??

I used the Wilton round ball pan.
