I baked a large sheet cake, and colored the icing. For the cowboy hat I colored fondant and had a mini ball pan.I cut the ball flat on the bottom. Before I put the buttercream icing on it, I made a couple of cuts on the ball, like the indents of a cowboy hat. I then covered it with the fondant. Then I rolled out another piece and stuck the hat part on it, and rolled it into the shape of the brim. Its a little flat, but it was the first try with it, and my son liked it, so that is all that matters, RIGHT?
