Challenging Myself

Challenging Myself on Cake Central

I was watching Ron Ben Isreal on Sugar Rush a few weeks ago and decided to challenge myself by making a dummy cake with his same design. Following my belief that I have to challenge myself (since I am a beginner) with difficult projects, I decided to give it a try. VERY labor intensive. I used Satin Ice chocolate fondant, made the appliques by rolling lace and fondant/gumpaste together through pasta machine, then outlining in royal icing. The ribbons were a nightmare - solid bands all around.

This is stunning! Lace with fondant through the pasta machine? Really? What a great tip The ribbon may have been a nightmare, but you got it done neatly! Any tips on that? Do you roll it up to keep it from breaking/stretching when you are putting it on the cake? I love the flowers on the ribbons. How'd you make those? Enough questions? Lovely, just lovely.

LisaMS, I rolled up the bands and then applied them but it really was a nightmare. I did it freehand. The medallions in the center of the bows are molds I bought on Ebay. Just pressed fondant/gumpaste into the mold then brushed with dust.

Thanks for the reply Gingerela. I've seen where you can buy embossed bands by the roll; I wonder if those would be easier to apply. Didn't see any plain ones though; and that is what i would like to buy.

I'm speechless! This does not look like a beginner cake! Wonderful job! You should be soooo proud of yourself!

Thanks for the lovely comments. LisaMS, what do you mean by embossed bands by the roll? The ribbons on the cake are made of fondant and gumpaste, not actual ribbon. I had to remember to breathe when I was applying them to the cake rounds.

It looks like a lot of work, but you did an awesome job. I too am a beginner and the thought of attempting this frightens me! Amazing work - truly a magazine cover!!
