Thomas The Train

Thomas The Train on Cake Central

This was my first paid cake. Everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. The mmf was runny and speckled, tried a new cake recipe - the enhanced cake batter - it fell in the middle, nothing went according to plan. But, it was for a 3 year old who thought it was "perfect". I don't think I'm going to charge the mom, I'm just not that happy with with it.

My son is turning 3 and loves Thomas. He loves this cake. And at that age he thinks he's an expert!!!! It is well worth what ever amount you charge.

Thanks for your reply to my post about the Thomas cake pan. Your Thomas cake is great! Did you use fondant over the entire cake?

on

Yes. Everything is covered in mmf. I covered it in sections - the tall part, the front part and the round parts. Then I put stripps down to cover seams. Thanks for the compliment. Good Luck. Let me know if I can be of more help.

wow, that is good - dont be hard on your self, also dont get the rep that you do cakes for free/ really cheap - a deal is a deal - you do have time and expenses in the cake, again the cake is wonderful

Thanks guys! You made me feel better. I have been really down on myself about this cake. When it's family, I don't really stress out as much. But, with other people, I get overly nervous. Thanks again!

Thomas came out wonderful. You are your own worst critic. Take a look at what they sell in grocery stores and they still charge :) Your cake is 100 times better then any of those...just step back and take a look at it and you will see past whatever you think is wrong w/ it

You really put a lot of work into this cake. You got every detail. My Thomas and others I have seen have shortcuts but yours is to the "T"!

This cake is fabulous. Man, you shoulda charged a bundle. I'm sure the folks who got it are still talking about it, and will for years to come.

Can you share with me how you constructed this cake? It is UNBELIEVEABLE. How did you get all the shapes . i.e. the round part of the train, the curved part of the front of the train...) all I can say is WOW! ..and how?

on

The round part is 2 soup cans. The train is a 9 x 13 and a round cake cut to fill in areas (because I under estimated how much cake I needed). When I make this again, I will bake 2 - 9 x 13 and 2 cans. The red part (base) is 50/50 fondant gumpaste shaped and set on a cake board cut to size. Let this dry for 2 days. The wheels are cardboard circles covered in fondant and royal icing lines. I sat the base on 3 styrafoam blocks and stuck the weels in with sticks. Thanks and good luck!

Ahh, you guys are making me blush! And feel a lot better, thanks. I just need to relax more - I tell people the same thing all the time. It's hard to listen to your own advice.
