Yes, I used a flat brush (that is only used for this purpose, of course!!). I thinned down the buttercream with corn syrup. I may try to use something different next time though, it seemed like it wanted to seperate...

Did you have a special cake pan for this, or did you have to cut the cake to form the 1? I may do one for my daughter's birthday!

I cut it from a cake to form the 1. I made a template from parchment paper, layed it over the cake and cut around it with a knife. But you could do it without the template.
