Topsy Turvy Pan on Cake Central

this is the first shaped cake that i made...i always use the 8" round pan for my practice cakes...i couldn't smooth out the icing and the vertical lines and the spirals are breaking...is my icing too thick? it also happens when i use the star tip...there are no pointed tips on the stars... i used all crisco on my bc icing...

thanks :D i got it in the sheet that came with the pan i just switched the colors of the bottom and middle layer :D
